Arthur J. Edwards to Leave Staff of The Statesman After Nearly 50 Years of Service Arthur J. Edwards, a Statesman staff employe for near half a century and Its pressroom foreman for the last 43 years, is retiring this week to devote full time to his long-standing hobby horses. Edwards, who currently is agent for the army's remount service in the Willamette valley, began work with The Statesman as carrier boy July 1, 1898. At the same time, he began training as a pressman, carrying on both jobs for several years before taking over of The Statesman's newspa per press. The retiring foreman served this newspaper through three wars, and has been responsible for printing probably more than 75. 000,000 copies of The Statesman. No issue ever was missed while he was in charge of the press. Ed wards' services in other parts of the valley also have been in con siderable demand for many years, in repairing and setting up press room equipment. A charter member of the AFL pressman's local 247 which feted him Tuesday night, Edwards has been with The Statesman longer than any other employe. His ser vice has been continuous except for a few months just before World War II. He had planned to retire then, but when war service took other pressroom workers to whom his duties had been en trusted, Edwards recruited a new crew and returned to operate The Statesman's press throughout the emergency. Edwards, a native of Manitoba, Canada, but a Salem resident since he was 6 years old, said in an nouncing his retirement that he had been "very proud to devote my career to The Oregon States man." He and his wife reside at 1150 Waller st. A son, Cecil Ed wards, is in business at Pomona, Calif.
