PaKombor 11. 1947 Bearcats Play San Jose In Basket Series Here Willamette ITs basketballing Bearcats, rulers supreme over the Northwest conference after their two loop excursions, now step up with the faster company in a two game series Monday and Tuesday nights with the highly touted San Jose college Spartans of Califor nia. The games will be the follow up of the series opened in San Jose last season when the Bear cats dropped two decisions to the Spartans. . Both will start at 8 o'clock in the WU gym and will find the Cats much better equipped to face the tough Golden Staters this time. Coached by Walt McPherson, the Spartans have practically the same outfit they had last season, plus the addition of John (Red) Kane, formerly ofOregon State and "Swift" Wunker, ex-Indiana U player. Others are Bob Wuest- hoff, Bon Staley, Bob Hagen,Stu Inman, Jim Cruz and Ralph Ro mero. Six-foot," three-inch center Jnman is the team's standout. Klamath ran to a 12-6 first quarter lead but then both teams faltered and were able to share but two points in the entire sec ond period. Klamath was out in front 19-15 at the third period Both quints played fast but were guilty of missing many shots. Five Players In f300' Class NEW YORK, Dec 20-GFV- The National Collegiate Athletic bu reau, in announcing the 1947 foot ball season's single - game highs and lows in individual perform ance, disclosed today that five dif ferent players performed the rare feat of accounting for 300 yards or more in an afternoon. Great est one - day passing and rushing output was registered by Bobby Gage of Clemson, who totaled 374 yards against Auburn. He carried the ball 18 times for 141 yards and passed for 233 more yards in his 43 plays. Fred Enke, jr of Arizona, the nation's 1947 total offense cham pion, gained 364 yards in the same number of plays while his team was losing to Orange Bowl bound Kansas. All - America Bob Chappuis of Michigan's Rose Bowlers, got 307 yards against Ohio State and Stan Bloomer of Fordham got the same number against New , York university. Y Dec. 20 -tfV Washington State's unbeaten bas ketball team scored its ninth victory of the season tonight, defeating Canisius 48-37 in Memorial auditorium before 7,391 spectators. The first game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled when Oregon, which was to have met Niagara, could not reach Buffalo in time. The Ducks airplane was ground ed in Cleveland. Coach Jack Friel of the visiting Cougars alternated two teams as units in keeping constant pres sure on the Griffins. Canisius suffered an off night hitting only 11 of 80 field goal at tempts, while the Cougars made 18 of Co tries. Idaho, for the sev enth annual Sun Valley intercol legiate ski meet Dec. 28 to 31, Jim Scanlan, public relations director for the resort, announced today. Prof Visions Duck Wipeout NEW YORK, Dec 20 -OP) -A five-year closed season on wild fowl hunting would! quadruple the supply of birds, in the opinion of Dr. Ludlow Griscom of Harvard. Otherwise, he says an increasing number of hunters will continue to shoot a decreasing number of ducks until the sport dies a na tural death. Dr. Griscom, research curator of Harvard's' zoology department points out that the shooting- pres sure must be kept down for sev eral years until the desired in crease' in duck population is reached.
