Piacember 11, 194f iMiss Joan nandaii is Engaged ' One of the first engagements to be revealed during the holiday pea son was made known Satur day afternoon when Miss Joan Randall told a group of her friends bf her betrothal to James Rich ard Phillips, son of Mr. and Mrs. William L. Phillips. The pretty bride-elect is the daughter of Mrs. Bessie H. Randall and L. E. Ran- pall. , The romantic news was an- pounced at a smorgasbord lunch eon for which Miss Randall's sis ter, Mrs. John Johnson, was host ess at her Fairmount Hill home. Ehortly after the guests arrived ley found Individual Christmas packages under a large decorated tree in the living room. In each was a jpink and blue sachet ad toried with painted flowers and bearing the names of the engaged puo. Simultaneously arrived a box , tf flowers with the engagement - ling for the bride-to-be. . . " - The buffet luncheon table was Centered with a silver Christmas tree decorated with lain and pink lights with pink candles flanking the tree. ". Phillips, Jr, Daryl Jones, Courtney Jones, Ed ward Salstrom, Ernest Hobbs, Rud Coons, Misses Barbara Sun det, Dolores Clement, Patricia Brock, Midge Newton, Gloria My ers, Miriam Schellenberger, Doris Dixon, Joan Fitzmaurice, Betty Jean Manoles, Patricia Africa, Joan Adolph, Gwtn Rust, Rita Harr, Meta Wooldridge, Gloria and Barbara McClintock, Harriet Huston, Jane Carson, Suzanne Small, Peggy Sears, Patricia Nick ens, Madeleine Keene of Corval lis, Mariann Croisan, Sally M wil ier of Klamath Falls. Miss Randall and her fiance are graduates of Salem high school and both attended the Un iversity of Oregon. She is a mem ber of Pi Beta Phi sorority and his fraternity is Phi Delta Theta. Mr, Phillips is now attending Wil lamette university and during the war he served In the army. jThe Spinsters will hold a special meeting on Monday night at the home of Miss Joan Beakey at 8 o'clock. Smith was honored at a surprise birthday party for which his wife was hostess at their Lansing avenue home Fri day night Cards, games and dancing were enjoyed and refreshments were served buffet style during the evening. Two sisters ef Mrs. Joha Dalk, the Misses Hazel and Thomasine Kelly of Newark, Ohio are in Salem to spend the holidays at the Dalk home. Mrs. Kebert Hoist was a host ess at her home on Thursday far a Christmas tea. She used holi day decorations throughout the rooms. Mrs. Daa Heiaaa ef Weedland. Washington has been visiting a few days with her mother, Mrs. E. B. Perrine. The two women went to Woodland on Saturday for the holidays. Miss East Will Wed' In . Spring Wearing a diamond on her thiad finger, left hand, is Miss Emma Louise East, whose engagement to Robert H. Donovan was made known this weekend. Miss East is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. East and Mr. Donovan is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. II. Dono van of Oregon City. Miss East attended Willamette university, ' is a member of Pi Beta Phi. and is employed in the registrar's office at the univer sity. She attended Salem schools. Mr. Donovan, fifth year educa tion student at Willamette univer sity, served in the navy during the war and attended Willamette under the V-12 program. He at tended West Linn schools. Although wedding plans have not been definitely set, the cou ple plans springtime nuptials. The Salem Writers elab met on Wednesday with Mrs. Blanche Jones as hostess.
