trends prevailed in to
day's stock market with volume
topping the million-share level
for the second time since No
vember 19.
From the start professional
short covering and .reinvestment
demand tended to offset year-end
tax selling. Buying still was
predicated on the idea that the
recent slide to average lows since
last June called for a substantial
technical comeback. Rails again
were benefitted by fare -boosts
and hopes for freight rate in
creases. An oversubscription of
a special 34,000-share offering of
Montgomery Ward was helpful.
Transfers of 1,070.000 shares
compared with 960,000 Monday.
The Associated Press 60-stock
composite was up .3 of a point
at 63.3 Where it had retrieved a
sizeable part of last Friday's
slump. Of 1,018 issues registering,
514 rose and 292 fell.
