November 22. 1947 1 ODD OOD O O O 13 Candidates For City Posts To Take Exam Thirteen candidates for the city -fire department and five for the J police force who took written ex ' uninations for regular civil serv ice appointments last Tuesday will be given physical examinations next Tuesday, City Recorder Al fred Mundt announced Friday. Mundt saicMhe physical exams will be given at the city hall and that the results of the written tests would not be announced until the Dhvsicals -have been completed. - Members of the fire department now servingTon a temporary basis who will take the physical exam ination are LaMarr Shepard, Ger Id T. Hall, Frank Hills, Clarence C. Nelson. Donald Hill, Robert Erikson and Bill Bishop. New can didates are Allen C. Snyder. G. A "Noff singer, Theodore Cupp, James Rector and Eugene Carver. , Temporary members of the po lice department to take the exam ination are Lewis Wells, Glenn Foster, Everett Odle and Edward Pease. School News By Donna Carr PARRISU JUNIOR HIGH Agency Farmed A new service to Parrish stu dents is an employment agency set up to aid those who are in terested in finding jobs. Harriet Hiday and Don Case will be chairman of the service. Calls re ceived through the office will be turned over to them and they in turn will distribute the jobs. Triad Members Chosen Alice Rausen, Pat Wagner, Jean Turnbull, Helen Germain, Kay Perrin, Carol Woodroffe, Carolyn Messmer, Alice Waters, Janet Kufner, Janet Wiley, Pat Hall and Wilman Blue were chosen for the treble triad from those who auditioned. Miss Gretchen Kream er serves as the adviser for the group. Committee Members Bill Cranor, chairman. Patsy Pease, Mary Lou Zumwalt, and Gary Ferguson make up the build ing committee at Parrish. This group inspects the halls and checks for open lockers and dam age or misuse of school property. JRC Projects The Junior Red Cross council has made 250 nut cups , for the Veterans' hospital in Roseburg Serving on the committee were Cleta Martin, Lois Hall and Ro ger Weaver. The group has had 1,000 menu covers made from a linoueum block print made by Loyal -Howard, a student from Mrs. Francis Walker's art class. Another set of 330 handmade menu covers were presented by students from Mr. Robert Voigt's art classes. Schlegel ALBANY, Nov. 21 John M. Schlegel, 82, resident of Albany for the past 50 years, died in Al bany General hospital Thursday, November 20, after two weeks ill ness. Funeral will he held from the Twelfth street Mennonite church, time to be announced by the Fisher Funeral home. Rev. George Kauffman, pastor of the church. Rev. Paul Roth of Bar low, and Rev. Gordon Jaffe of Albany will conduct the services, Born in Pulaski, . Ioway Dec. 5, 1864, came here from Iowa in 1897 and' had engaged in farming since then. He was a member of the Twelfth Street Mennonite church. May 17, 1892, he married Anna Roth in Nebraska. She - died in 1924. Survivors are two sons and four daughters, J. R. Schlegel, Homer Schlegel, Mrs. Mary Roth, Mrs. Ada Resser and Mrs. Maudie Hyerly all of Albany; Mrs. Sadie Reeves, Van Nuys, Calif.; also three brothers, Harry S. Leander, and Ed Schlegel, and sister, Mrs. Mary Erb all of Albany; five brothers and two sisters, all in the middle west; 43 grandchildren and 32 greatgrandchildren. arl D. Ashling ALBANY Earl D. Ashling, 54, died at the family home on route 4, Albany, Wednesday, Nov. 20, after illness of two years. Funeral services will be held from the Fisher Funeral home at 2 p. m. Tuesday, November za, wiin the Rev. Edward Terry officiating. Burial in Willamette Memorial park. Born at Naperville, HL, Mar. 11, 1893, Ashling had lived in Minne sota and Canada, before coming here in 1938, to engage in farm ing. On May 22, 1922, he married Ruth Larson at Ada, Minn., who survives as do two children, Ada Ashling, nurse in Portland; Roy at home; also are a brother and three sisters all in middle west. Edna May Downing ALBANY, Nov. 21 Funeral services for Mrs. Elsie May Down ing, who died, in a local hospital Wednesday, November 19, after long illness, will be held from Fisher Funeral home, 1:30 p. m., Saturday, November 22. Burial in Willamette Memorial park. Born in Central City, Neb., May 26, 1891, Elsie Blair came to Oregon in 1902, lived at Luther, Muwaukie and the last year in Albany, (coming from Tillamook. Mrs. Downing was a member of the La comb grange and had been in the hospital three months. She was married twice, first to Leo Carver on August 1910, in Portland. Mr. Carver died in 1918. On June 12, 1921, she married William J. Downing who sur vives. Other survivors are three children Mrs. Edna Pierce of Willamina, Mrs. Mildred Wilson of Albany, Frank Carver of San Francisco; seven-brothers and sis- ten, Lewis Blair, George Blair David Blair, Mrs. Laura Coo PI and Mrs. Bertha Cook all of Mil waukee; Charles Blair of Salem, and Mrs. Pearl Brooks of Orchard Wash., and nine grandchildren. William A. Patten INDEPENDENCE William A. Patten, prominent hop grower in the Independence area for the past 45 years, died here Wednesday. He was bom in Lane county March 7, 1875, the son of Henry and Jane Patten, and moved to Independence with his parents when he was seven years old. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge. Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Paloma Smith of Independence: grandson. Robert Johnston of Portland and two sisters, Martha Sloper of Independence and Josie Cosgrove of Salem. Services will be held from the Walter L. Smith mortuary In In dependence Sunday at 2 p.m., the Rev. John Hood officiating. Con cluding services will be in the Mt. Crest Abbey mausoleum in Sa-lem.
