PASTOR'S COAT TAKEN
The Rev. Dudley Strain's top
coat was taken from offices at
First Christian church here Wed
nesday afternoon, - he informed
city police. When he1 first noticed
it was missing, he thought some
one had taken it by mistake, but
when it had not been returned by
late Wednesday, he notified au
thorities, the police report stated.
Police had investigated the night
before after prowlers broke Into
First Presbyterian church, but
took nothing.

Capt. Leonard C. Or ton, Salem,
who holds the record for spend
ing the longest time as a patient
in Madigan General hospital, Ft
Lewis, Wash., will be discharged
soon to return to his home, hos
pital authorities reported Thurs
day. A battle casualty of the last
war, Capt. Orton has been con
fined to the army hospital since
Feb. 3, 1945, according to a hos
pital news release.

POLICE DANCE POSTPONED
The annual policemen's ball and
dance, scheduled for tonight at the
Crystal Galrdens, has been post
poned because of the deaths of
Oregon fenicials in the Lake coun
ty plane crash, it was announced
Thursday. Tickets are to be valid

on a dare to be announced later.

Three indictments, one of them
secret, were returned as true bills
Thursday by the Marion county
grand Jury, andfour not-true bills
were returned."
Meanwhile. Leonard and Neda
Chastain, 550 Water st. waived
grand jury indictment on two
counts of forgery, pleaded guilty
before Circuit Judge George R.
Duncan and sentence was set for
November 8, following pre-sentence
investigation by the state
parole board. They were arrested
October 16 by Salem city police.
Two True Bills Disclosed
The two true bills whose de
fendants were disclosed charged
Ben Creasy, 330 E. Bush st, who
was arrested September 12, with
obtaining money under false pre
tenses and Bruce Thaxton Ander
son with escaping from the state
penitentiary.
Creasy allegedly , issued and
cashed a worthless $501 check at
Johnson's store in Salem in early
September. r ;
Anderson, who was a trusty, es
caped July 29, 1944, from the
prison flax mill and was recap
tured September 12 of this year
in New YQrk, where, he had served
a prison term. His sentence from
Gilliam county was three years for
larceny.

Search for the body of Roy
Statz, 16, of Newberg, believed
drowned when a boat capsized in
the Willamette river near Wheat
land ferry Tuesday afternoon,
was continued Thursday by per
sons living along the river, Mar

ever, was not continued because
of the stream's swollen condition

ROAD POLICY SET
Regulation of tile-laying along
county roads, by requiring eight
foot openings every 35 feet of tile,
was adopted as a policy Thursday
by Marion county court. Thei
openings win permit road crews
to clean out stopped-up tile with
out having to excavate. The re
quirement is already in effect on
roads under control of the state
highway commission.

Devers Refutes
Increase in Auto
Speed on Beaches
Reports that J. M. Devers. at
torney for the state highway com
mission, had authorized a speed
of motor vehicles on the Oregon
beaches in excess of 25 miles an
hour, were denied by Devers here
Thursday.
Devers said the state law pro
vides for a maximum speed of 25
miles an hour on the Oregon
beaches which can be reduced by
the state highway commission
under certain conditions.
The attorney said the highway
commission has made no change
in the maximum speed fixed by
the legislature up this time.
