SalemStores To Stay Open Armistice Day Plana foe the retail business year ahead from Armistice day through Christmas to spring were tackled Friday by some SO representative retail merchants of Salem. At the Retail Trade bureau luncheon in the Golden Pheasant restaurant it was decided that all stores will remain open on Armis tice day .this year, contrary to the practice of recent years but in line with Eugene and Portland. Bureau President Mai Rudd said the merchants felt they should remain open until such time that Armistice day is desig nated a nationwide business holiday. The merchants also agreed on a program of elaborate street decor ations for the Christmas season, to cover the downtown trading area from Marion to Ferry streets. The Allied Arts studio of Port land will decorate the streets in mid-November, it was decided. Also discussed was the possibili ty of general store openings every Friday night,, primarily to ac commodate male shoppers and family groups. The store opera tors decided not to attempt eve ning hours immediately, except to plan for several night openings. preceding Christmas. The trade bureau will reconsider the evening opening matter again next spring.; Even the proposed Oregon sales tax entered into the merchants' meeting, in the form of an unof ficial straw vote in which a show of hands found only five of the group of about 50 businessmen indicating they favored the tax. Corn Displays Weak Trend CHICAGO, Oct. S -CP)-Corn displayed independent weakness on the Board of Trade today, dropping several cents on reports that the crop will be considerably larger than was thought possible a few weeks ago. Wheat and oats ended with little change. Wheat closed unchanged to 1 cent lower, December $2.85-2.834, corn was 2s-3 lower, Decem ber $2J5Vi-4, and oats were i lower to higher, December $1.124-. The Commodity Credit Corpora tion announced it bought 2.635,000 bushels of wheat yesterday at Kansas city, 1,405,000 bushels at Minneapolis and 693,990 bushels at Chicago. However, there were reports in the trade that the CCC has purchased sufficient grain to meet export allocations for the re mainder of this year.
