Four hundred; and twenty eight tons were shipped out of here last season and prospects are that more will leave, here this year. From 10 to 14 tons of pickling- slze sucumbers are shipped by truck to Porlland from, here each night, and 107 acres in this vicin ity are contracted to Libby, Mc Neal & Libby of Portland. Growers realize from 20 tons down per acre and are paid ac cording to grade. Number ones sell for $160 per ton. No. 2's for $80, No. 3's for $30. and miscel laneous grades, $12.50 per ton. The price paid this year is the same as that of last year, with the excep tion of the No. 2 grade which is $10 higher. The top income per acre on cu cumbers reported here last year was $1389.15. Edlund, 649 Cener st., changed his plea from inno cent to guilty in municipal court Friday on charges - of reckless driving with liquor involved, and was fined $100. Aug. 29 Margaret Anne Kauffman, 7 year old daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Kauff man of route 1, Aurora, dird at the family home Thursday after a lingering illness. Born April 3. 1940 at Hubbard and had lived with her parents in the Hubbard and Aurora districts all her life time. Surviving besides the parents are three brothers and one sis ter, all at home. Maurice. Gary. Adrian and Hazel; her grandpar ents. Mr. and Mrs. Simon Hostel ler of Aurora and Mrs. Mattie Kauffman of Hubbard. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Zion Mennonite church, east of Hub bard under direction of the Miller Funeral Home, Aurora. The Rev. C. L. Kropf will officiate and in terment will be in the Zion Men nonite cemetery. Chinese Stop Dairen Trade SHANGHAI, Friday,' Aug. 29 (A')- Customs authorities aid to day the Chinese government had advised them that Russian ships have been forbidden to trade be tween Dairen and other ports in China. The new order also prohibits other foreign ships from calling between soviet-occupied Dairen and China ports. However, Russia llo.'S only Russian ships to use the South Manchurian port. The China Daily Tribune said the step was taken by the Chinese government because "the taking over of Dairen (by China) has been obstructed' Control of Dai ren was supposed to pass to China under a treaty with Russia." . The move was regarded widely in Shanghai as a gesture by the Chinese to draw mote attention to Russia's continued occupation of Dairen. Hapimett Service Today Funeral services for Charles Alfred Hammctt, resident of Sa lem for the past 15 years who died at a local hospital Thursday, will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at the Clough-Bari ick chapel, the Rev. John W. Hood officiating. Interment will be at Bclcrest Me morial park. Hammctt was born in Iowa, Oct. 9, 1866. He moved to Ne braska and was married in 1888 to Ollie Smith, who survives him. From Nebraska the Hammetts moved to South Dakota and then to Corvallis before moving to Sa lam. JIammett was a farmer and retired about 10 years ago. Surviving besides the widow are a daughter, Mrs. Maude Neal of Wallowa: three sons, Clyde Hammett of Willamina.
