Nel Van Vliet of Hil versum, a suburb of Amsterdam, won the breast stroke crown with a 2:58.6 clocking in the finals after "'loafing" to a 'qualifying 3:03.4, both of which bettered a 15-year-old American record of 3:06.3. Upholding American prestige, Ann Curtis of San Francisco cap tured the 400 meter free style for the fifth straight year with a 5:21.5 time, shaving five-tenths of a 'second from the American rec ord of 5:22 set by Nancy Merki of Portland, Ore., in 1939. It was the second record-breaking per formance by Miss Curtis in as many days in the tall, blonde star's try for a triple slam in the three-day meet.
