Session laws are now being distributed. Brooks Garden Club Wins Ml. Angel Prize BROOKS The entry of Brooks Garden club won first place in the Floral division in the Flax festi val parade at Mt. Angel, Satur day. It was designed by Mrs. Emma Wad ley and Mrs. Margaret Lowery, who were assisted by other members' of the Garden club. Riding on the float were Ann Lowery, Esther WacHey, Flo Hadley, Carol Rasmu&sen and Irene Harris, future garden club bers, and future farmers were Glenn Wadley and Billie Lowery. 3 Valley Men Enlist in Army Fteenlisting In the regular army infantry forces at Fort Lewis re cently was C'pl. William A. Gors line, 22, son of Lloyd Gorsline, 702 Fairview ave., Dallas. Cor poral Gorsline, who attended In dependence high school, is a, vet eran of eight months in the Pa cific with the 184th infantry regi ment. Wagers, Salem route 8, enlisted for an initial term of two years and is now at Fort Lewis, Wash. Local Legionnaires To Attend National IVIeet in New York i i ' - At least two Salem officers ol the American Legion, with their families, will attend the Legion's national convention in New York City August 27 to 29. "Kelly" Owens, Oregon department vice-commander, with his wife and son, Beldon, and Ira Piicher, national committeeman of the 40 et 8 society, and Mrs. Piicher will leave Salem August 22 for Detroit. Mich., by air. From Detroit the party intends to motor intp Canada and then to New York for the convention. They expect to be gone about ' a month. Owens and Piicher are both members of Salem's Capital post 9. Gervais Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Hill are on a trip to Canada in their car and trailer house. ALLEY VACATED S1LVERTON An ordinance providing for the vacation of an alley in the vicinity of the local cannery was adopted at a special meeting of the Silverton city coun cil , Monday night following a hearing at which n objections to the vacation were made. Pur chase unl installation of a police radio and authorization of sale of the city's power mower to the school district was also voted. Seasonal Jobs Start to Reduce Unemployment . Employment in Marion county soared during July as seasonal activities ' absorJed workers, ac cording to a report issued by the Salem office of the state employ ment service Tuesday. At the beginning of August an estimated j 1,500 were unemployed as compared with 2,000 on July 1. However July's unemployment in the county was 78 per cent higher than duriing the same period a year ago.S according to a report Irom the 'state unemployment compensation commission last week. Of the total number of job less at ithe beginning of this month, 545 were women and 530 veterans. Logging! and lumber industries in the county, operating on full production, hired an estimated 1.250 workers. Food processing plants increased their hiring rate and werei employing 3.805 work ers (1,644; men and 2,151 women) at the end of July. It was pre dicted tht August would see a further rise in cannery employ ment, i Employment officials reported a shortage of workmen in most building crafts. A total of 242 non seasonal frders for workers re mained unfilled at the office at the beginning of August. Of these, 36 were fbr domestics and 50 for skilled office workers. Immigration in this area in creased sljghtly during July when 215 migrants reported into the office as compared with 196 dur ing June. Outlook for August, as pictured by the olljice, includes a period of hiih employment in the Salem air;. Wide Range in Grain Prices CHICAGO. Aug. 12 Corn pru-es covered a wide range in today's session at the board of trade, and tarried other grains with it. All grains were up sharply at the opening, influenced by the government crop report released at 'the close of trading yesterday, and lack of moisture over the crop area. Toward midsession. reports of light rains in Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota started a selling wave which carried corn down as much as mine cents, and wheat and oats down about 4 rents before rally developed.
