Soviet Reports
Hungary Party
Chiefs Death
BUDAPEST, Aug. 8 -(.- A
reliable informant said today
soviet authorities had reported
the death of Bela Kovacs, whose
alleged confession implicating
former Premier Ferenc Nagy in
a plot to overthrow the -Hungar
ian government led to the com
munist coup in which Nagy was
exiled.
The informant said he had seen
a letter from Russian authorities
reporting to the Hungarian gov
ernment the death of Kovacs,
former secretary general of
Nagy's smallholders party.
This source, who could not be
quoted by name, said Soviet Min
ister G. N. Pushkin had reported
the death without specifying the
place or time - to the . office of
Acting Foreign Minister Erno
Nihalyfi. A spokesman for Ni
halyfi told a news conference
"nothing is known" about the
state of Kovacs' health.!
Russian troops arrested Kovacs
at his home the night of Feb. 25
on grounds that he was guilty of
espionage against the soviet army.
Later it was announced he had
"confessed" to a plot to over
throw the Hungarian government
in which Nagy was implicated.
The American government pro
tested strongly against Kovac's
arrest. The Russians refused U. S.
demands for copies of the alleged
deposition from Kovacs which
contained the alleged confession.
Bikini Ships Still
Being De-Atoniized
WASHINGTON, Aug. 8.-,P-The
navy announced today that
target ships which survived the
Bikini atom bomb tests 13 months
ago have arrived at west coast
and Hawaiian ports and although
still "unsafe" there is no danger
to inhabitants.
The navy said clean-up crews,
working only a few hours a day,
are slowly and carefully remov
ing the dangerous radioactive con
lamination. They are spraying
the ships' paint with secret acids
and washing down the vessels
with special fluids.
