OpSflD(iDnDDiiD George Ailing. Rosarian of the Salem Men's Garden club, says that rote pruning time will soon be upon us again Says F.ctarian Ailing about the Job: 'About the last of February or the first of Man-h is prun ing urn-, ssuine one answers 'Oh, f,: yeh? I did that f'C iasi year ana my r best rotes were gone the last of May.' Eut don't Uliie Madsen let that mislead you. We may not get another warm, dry May like '46 in 25 years. "If you are getting new plants row, a treat many are already propei ly pruned, west coast ones about 10 :nches, ea3t ones even lower. I have, however, seen sugne shipments which didn't seem to be pruned at all.. In such cases new plants should be cut back to about 10 inches. After planting, be sure to hi.l up earth around new cane?;. In this country this is to conserve moisture until plants are established, and not for cold pro tection. Don't Prone Heavily "On older, established plants, many of the best growers and mo-t con; iitent prize winners seem to favor a height ot 18 to 24 inche. claiming not only more but slw: better blooms. Make the cut dtaffnclly, point out. just above an r.utside eye. Too close to the eye mey damage bud tissue, but to far away may cause die back. AH weak twiggv or inter fering cares and laterals should be remrvcd, likewise any very old worm. For this a keyhole or small pi unlng saw is necessary. Sometimes a bush which has got ; down to a single leggy stem can be 'remaidened' by cutting back almost to the ground, thus forcing out new basal growth. Except in case of valuable or hard-to-re-place stock, this is usually not worth while as it is quicker and cheaper to buy a new plant. i "While most plants will stand ' shorter pruning if desired, beauti ful little Orange Nassau has been driven off the market by this prac tice. Fred Edmunds, likewise, makes a good bush if left alone. Low spreading plants, typically Sierra Glow and Bright Wings, should be pruned to an inside - -or should I say upside eye - -thus forcing new growth upwards. Pruning" Polyanthaa "Polyanthas. Floribundas and shrubs usually require only suf ficient pruning to keep centers open, bushes shapely and in bounds. Some very vigorous, tall growing Floribundas such as Red Ripples, must be cut back or they would soon become altogether too tall. The same procedure usually applies to climbers and pillars: bearing in mind that most true climbers (not climbing hybrid teas) bloom on second year wood, so potential new growth cut away now means so many less flowers next year. "Standards (trees) usually re quire more pruning than bushes do as there is something awesome about a five foot bush on a four foot standard. For this reason I prefer the lower, more open grow ers for trees." Questions and Answers M. B. asks what spring-flowering shrubs will bloom in doors by forcing. Ans.: the forsythias, spireas, Japanese cherries. Japanese quince will all do very well if brought indoors. Kerria will also come out nicely. Don't have them in an overheated room. An even warmth of 60 to 70 degrees seems to bring them out without drying out. Any warmer than that is too warm both for you and the blooms you wish to force. And give them fresh water every morning. One "forcer"- advied me that the water should be just under lukewarm - -in other words, take the chill off. T. L. R. asks if I can tell her , the name of the cosmos strain i which comes into bloom early. Ans.: The Sensation strain does. There may be others, too. but I know this strain of cosmos is good for early blooming. B. G. writes that last year he : had trouble with rust on his per ennial phlox and now that they i are coming out of the ground, wants to know what to do to start its control. Ans.: Control with sulfur dusts or sprays. Fermate will also con trol the rusts. Start dusting early (not .just now) but along in April 3 TTntvl Continuous Today HOW. from 1 P. M. Filbert growers must do more sales work if they are t continue successful with that crop, was an other opinion expressed by that committee in its 1947 session.
