K 'Thm Start man, Solam. Deck the Halls; 9Tis Season of Oregon Holly . "Deck" the halls with bpughs f holly. . . a , s That's the sentimeqt that 'has boosted Oregon's - English holly crop from an interesting special ized crop, into an industry which this year will export out of j the state a half million dollars' worth ol holly for decorative use during the coming Christmas season.: This was among points on hoUy culture explained yesterday noon before Salem Lions club by Ain brese Brown eil of Milwaukee, poultry man and commercial holly grower who has done much to boost the Oregon holly business. Brownell predicted the holly in dustry would export $3,000,000 worth of the product a year in. the near future, provided the high quality of English holly now be ing exported is maintained., He said that holly grows only in western Oregon and Washingtooi and has proven a good commer cial crop because of the demand for it from the East where none grows. Packing the holly so that only good cuttings are crated and. the holly -arrives east in good condi tion is a task that requires un skilled - .seasonal , workers.- "But they're easy to train," Brownell said. "1 just tell them to pack a box as if they were sending it to their mother." Brownell operates a L25-acr holly farm 'along the easWide highway between Oregon City and Portland.' His father planted the first holly orchard 37 years ago there, "and folks thought be was crazy," Brownell said at the luncheon meeting in the Hotel Marion. turday Expenses for Campaign Filed Three Ofegou citizens filed wttn ine state department yester- aay meir accounts of campaign expenses in behalf of the candi dacy of Earl Snell. re-lirrtmt Oregon governor.
