I Handcraft Salem Weaver Talks, Shows Work at Luncheon Session of Silverton Women By Maxlne Buren Woman's Editor. The Statesman Examples of modern weaving and a discussion of this and its relation to early colonial weaving entertained members of the Silver ton Women's club at a luncheon meeting Tuesday noon. Mrs. Lewis Anderson ct Salem was the guest speaker, and her weaving was shown. The speaker told about me ear- ly origin of the art of weaving and named some of the famous old weavers. She di.cussed early American weaving much of which took the form of coverlets, and she discussed the various me chanical devices for speeding up the weaving of materials. Her woven work included ex amples of woolens, cottons and linen, some of the yarn from the local linen mills. Mrs. Anderson, a member of the Weaving Guild of Salem, is one of a number of ambitious Sa lem women who do weaving at home for pleasure and some prof it She, like other weavers of the city, is looking forward to a na tional conference of weavers late next summer, which is planned for Salem. The funds from the silver tea will be given to the Children's Farm Home and the Coernhookor hospital. Engaged Another autumn roamnce cul minating in an engagement on the Willamette university campus, is that of Miss Virginia Barton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert N. Barton of Forest Grove, who announced her engagement Mon day to Artie Shaw, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Shaw of Salem. The couple, both of whom are university sophomores, have not set the date for the wedding. Miss Barton is an Alpha Chi Omega, majoring in English, and Mr Shaw is an Alpha Psi Delta, maj oring in chemistry. Starting Thursday, at the Elf- strom galleries is an exhibition of northwest landscapes in oil by Cyrus J. Fulton of Eugene. Some of these, his latest work, was gath ered during a trip into the Mt. Jefferson area last summer. He paints in a high key handling pro ficiently, cjlor composition. An unusual subject is a scene on Mt. Jefferson depicting a hiking group. at rest. In Caledonia, N.Y. the McEwans visited his home town and saw his brothers for the first time in thirty-three years. The McEwans returned home by way of the southern states and California. To Mr. and Mrs. John Wallace Graham go congratulations on the birth of a son, William Gerard, on November 8 at the Salem General hospital. The little boy, who weighed seven and a half pounds, has an older brother, John Wal lace, IV. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. William Wallace Graham of Salem and Dr. and Mrs. Gerard Tonning of Seattle.
