Game time will be it p. m. and will feature, along with the trained bnt unpredict able asses, the Salem Sand & Gravel baseball jvnlors up against an assortment of adult Eagles lodgers, augmented by players from their Junior nine. Anyone expecting a close re semblance to a baseball battle should stay home. But anyone anticipating a goodly portion of mirth will not be disappointed. Pitchers, catchers and batters will pursue usual habits while stationed oa the ground. But 1 fQ) rv-r-N tf&ffis1 This is about bulls. Not Ferdinand or the species we write, but about Brahatas and the brave souls who ride 'em. If you aren't al ready aware of it, the Brahma la lies to 2t0ff pounds and one who one to perch upon his broad back. Brahma bull riding Is a fea ture of next week's.state fair, and kt to be woven Into nightly pro grams booked for the fairgrounds stadium. The bulls, well teased beforehand so that the nasty sides of their disposition are ram pant, will afford the fair-goer aa ample portion of rodeo. Not eon tent with merely tossing- a care free cowboy on his ear. Mr. Brahma will oft as not follow through by trying to trample or horn his tormentor Into ham burger. It's great sport say the cowboys , themselves. And of course if they can stay aboard one of the monsters for eight seconds, hanging on to what's called a "loose rope" with one hand only, they qualify for some right fat cash prises. If they get thrown EARL. HOPPES and mauled, which can be often, they get sympathy and maybe flowers, but no money. Salem Rider Earl Hoppet Will Be There One of these modern Buffalo Bills, and doing right nicely at it, is Earl Iloppes. 2t-year-old Salem boy who Is the village's only professional bull rider appearing in the major shows. Earl has been riding for four years after getting his start on some bucking broncs on his dad. Otto Hoppes' acreage at 115 Park avenue. Already this year he has won championships in Brahma riding at Roseburg. White Salmon and Prinevllle. He was a second in the Portland Jantzen Beach show and makes a pretty pert living at doing nothing but bouncing about on the bovine. Young Hoppes holds the distinction of being the only em bryonic wrangler to--tay aboard one "Leppy" this year, same Leppy being 1209 compact pounds of assorted TNT. beeby-Jeebies and young young tornado. Both 150-pound Iloppes and Leppy will be among those present at the fair, and Leppy, they tell us. thinks nothing at all of sooming six or seven feet into the air and stirring up con siderable commotion in general wherever he might be. Coirboyg Want Toughetl El Torro in Pack Hoppes may not battle Leppy next week, however. The cowboys must draw for their bulls, so Leppy may wind up with someone else aboard. Judging is done on a 541-5 basis, 50 per cent on the bull and 50 more on the rider. The rider earns his 50 by hanging on for eight seconds. The bull earns his half by giving the cowboy a real ride. Should the bull be one with only a mild buck or two In him, the rider gets nothing. Consequently, the danger-loving riders, after those big purses, are actually disgruntled if they draw less than the most ferocious Ferdinand in the corral. So don't miss the rodeo toreadors In action next week. They'll show you something. And so will the Brahmas. Grid Exam Set for Salem September 20 Sporties: Football officials for Salem and vicinity will take the 1946 exams at the Villa Friday, September 20.
