executive council of the Ameri
can Federation of Labor today
called for "a sweeping congres
sional housecleaning" and directed
that "the political activities of the
AFL, both on local and national
bases; be expanded and Intensi
fied"
The council, at its quarterly
meeting, aaid in a statement that

AFL will continue its non-parti

national AFL headquarters would
be directed to compile voting rec

PORTLAND. Aug. The
Union county people's utility dis
trict was enjoined by Circuit
Judge James W. Crawford today
from continuing Its purchase pro
gram to buy the California-Electric
Utilities company.
The judge held that the trans
action, to have been consummated
Aug. 15. was illegal, aiul that
none of a $923,000 bond issue
voted in 1942 could be ued for
the purpose. Gui Solnroon, Port
land, attorney for the PUD, mean
while, aaid the ca.te would he
appealed to the supreme court.
The bond authorization was for
,925,000 the judge said, while
the purchase price of properties
to have been bought amounted
to more than $1,250,000.
