In addition to the five gold tro phies being offered as sweepr stake and grand prizes there are merchandise prizra and ribbon for winners in each of more than 50 classifications. June 13 JP) Zeno B. Katterle, assistant super intendent of schools, resigned to day with the explanation that he did not feel "the. financial future of public education in Portland is secure. He said he did not want to "warrant rOking my own future by remaining." He added that he had been appointed to a position at Washington State collrge. Fifty teachers, an unprecedent ed number, submitted resigna tions to the school board last night. Four more wre reported to have resigned today. L Soviets Scorn Spanish Plan NEW YORK. June 13. -"-The United Nations security council postponed action; on the contro versial Spanish case again today after Soviet Delegate Andrei A. Gromyko declared Russia would not support a new proposal to re fer the case to the 51 -nation gen eral assembly. The plan, proposed by Austra lian Delegate Herbert V. Evatt. had the support of a majority of the delegates, but Gromyko's vig orous attack raised the possibility that he might Invoke the veto when debate is' resumed next Monday afternoon. Howard suc cumbed last evening at the home of her parents. Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Schramm, 165 N. 17th st. Her illness had been of long duration but became acute a few weeks ago. Patricia L. Schramn was born irj Salem, Aug. 23. 1919, and spent her life here and in iCorvallis. She graduated from Salem high school in 1937 and f-um Wil lamette university in $41. She completed her arts coursieiin three years and devoted her- foiirth year to the study of law which she planned to pursue, until a severe illness following her graduation forced her to give up advanced study. On May 11. 1942. ft e was united in marriage to James J. Howard of Sandy. Ore. ; at San Djego, Calif., where Mr; Howard ws in the navy. He served through mot of the war in the -Oilth Pacific returning home last Seiptemter. Mr and MH. Howard went to C'orvallis last fall where he: resumed college work at OSC. A recurrence of the illness which hsjd beset her for five years caus ed; her to return to the parental home here. Mrs. Howard is survived by her husband, her parents, a sister. Susanna, rehabilitation assistant atlthe FiUsammons veterans' hos pital, Denver, and a brother, Phil lip, at home. She was a member of;the Beta Chi sorority. f Chap ter AR, PEO. Corallis. of the Ml. J ,t June 13 -V) Major Edward Bowes, figure in the entertainment world for many years, died tonight at his estate here. He would have been 72 years old tomorrow. There was no announcement of the immediate cause of his death. He had been in failing health re c e n t ly. Announcement of the death was made by Alvin Wil liams, the Major's secretary. The Major, whose last big ac complishment in the entertain ment field wa.s the amateur hour he conducted on the radio, re tired 13 months ago.
