Barley Contest J Announced for Valley Growers Willamette valley barley grow lers will be Interested in the brew ing brley contest that will be a part cf the Pacific International livestock exposition to be held in Portland October 5 to 12. The contest will provide a first ." prize T S250 and a second prize of 9109- for the entries from the Willamette valley. There will be A class for two-row barley and a class lor six-row barley. Inquiry from W. G. Nibler. - Marlon county agent, reveals that many acres of brewing bar ley have been sold from Marion county to the past few years at a premium price for growers To f be "suitable lor brewing purposes, ' Kibler says, barley must be of a certain -quality to produce good matt. 11 s the purpose of this .contest to familiarize growers with the qualities necessary for good brewing barley and to lo .' rate, some u peril r seed lot. Growers entering this contest ran afford to do considerable field roguing to clean up the harvested seed, says Nibler. ' Spediications for the contest re: acis exhibitor must hive at least 20 acres and county AAA committees must certify that the entry is representative of the 20 acres or more. Each entry must . be not less than lOO-pound grain sack. Exhibitors must agree to give the Great Western Malting com pany an option to buy his crop at the market plus suitable prem ium for seed. The company in I turn agrees that any seed thus bought wtfl be returned for seed i to the area in which the seed was produced, 1 Judging wilt be done by repre- sentatives of the state depart -; ments of agriculture of the three stated, a representative of the company, a representative of the USDA and a representative of the state colleges of the three states. Malting barley will be Judged on the following points: purity (freedom from mixtures of other kinds of barley in addition to other grains and weeds); color; Jreedpra from foreign material; uniformity; protein value; free dom from skinned and broken kernels. WHEAT READY BY Jt'LY 4 PORTLAND. June 12 -A)- The northwest's first wheat will be ready for harvest between July 4 andk 10, the Pacific Northwest Crop Improvement association said today. Harvey Midler, chairman of the state PMA committee. Under the 1946 schedule, top quality certified ladino clover seed will command a loan rate of $135 compared with last year's $1.50. More than 75.000 pounds of the 1945 'Crop were placed un der loan by Oregon producers. Uian rates lor two other seed crops have been lowered one cent a pound to eight cents for bien nial sweet clover and three cents for farm-stored sudan grass. Unchanged are alfalfa., common at 33 cents and certified at 40 cents; alslke clover. 25 cents; -red t lover, common at 28 rents and certified at 34 cents; certified or-, chard grass, 1$ cents; white clo ver 50 cents. These loan rates are for seed meeting basic germination and purity requirements. Appropriate discounts are provided for seed of lower quality.
