Even a $50,000 bequest by G. C. Richardson of Huron, S.D., to the person best defining the word failed to inspire them. Perhaps the most apt defini tion of the word by a Hollywood comic would be: "That for which I pay $5000 a, week to five men with index files" Or. as Bill Bendix puts it; "A joke is any thing said by a guy who has a lot of writers." Needs a Script For in this town, a comedian without a writer is like McCarthy without Bergen. He is hilarkms with a script in front of him. but rather dull in the parlor. As Fred Allen once said of Jack Benny: "He couldn't ad lib a belch after a Hungarian dinner." But coached or not. here is how some Hollywood funny men define a joke: Fibber McGee: "A device de signed to take the stuffing out of shirts." Bab Hope Says Bob Hope: "A joke is Ameri can for the Swedish word 'yolk, which is what I lay every Tues day night." Bing Crosby: "Whatever my producer says." Ed Gardner, the educated Ar chie of Duffy's Tavern: "The re lationship of a happening, an ac tion, a situation or an expression of an idea which appeals to a sense of the ludicrous or abso lutely incongruous." Tobacco was once used by In dians in middle America '-as a medicine and as incense in re ligious ceremonies. The temperature at the center of the sun is estimated to be 20,000,- 000 degrees Centigrade. KGW (929 ka) KEX (1199 ks) I Dave West Bugler Kneass News Id Songs if Ksrm Time !
