The paper was. founded in February 1887, 4a years after the townsite was platted, and when it was a town of 600 persons. A section of the last paper con-' tains excerpU from the news of the first edition including adver tisements, listing prices very dif ferent from thoe of today. Former Teacher Dies in Gorvallis Flora Bushnell Scarth, 48, one time Salem public jchool teacher, died Sunday at a Corvallis hos pital following sevctl weeks of illness. Funeral services are to be held this afternoon in Portland. Daughter of Grant C, Bushnell and Jennie Wright Bushnell, she was born June 8, 1898, in Port land and in 1918 was graduated from the normal school at Mon mouth.. In Portland in 1923 she was married to James A. Scarth, who with two daughters and her mother survives hr. The Scarths made their home in Portland un til 1932 when they moved to Sil verton.
