Gates Families Come, Go, for Yule Holiday GATES Mrs. Virginia Over lock spent the weekend In Salem. Mrs. Laura Blum visited the ilorners over Christmas. Richard Alen Kunston la home with his discharge. There is much visiting over the holidays but the flu epidemic Is keeping many at home. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Osterhout of Portland came down from Port land Sunday for Christmas with Mrs. Ruby Winters and Mrs. Lois Bnwtg. The Albert Millsaps went to Elraund Kleckers at Stayton Christmas and Mrs. E. L. Collins went to Salem. Mrs. Ted Hall -and children. raul Hall, Mr. and Mrs. Hall and family, and Mrs. Charles Tucker all spent Christmas with another brother In Silverton. Fred Stone and family spent the day with the Everett Stoakcs fam ily on the Grafe place. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Shepard of Tense t, Ida., and daughter Beverly are visiting the Adam Shepherds. A. D. Scott spent the day with the E. L. Davis family. Mrs. Maxln Cain la visiting the Stltta family. Louis Bock visited In Mill City and Gatea Sunday. She is a stu dent at University of Washington. Mr. and Mrs, Lincoln Henn spent Christmas with the Lowes. Carl Knutsons had a family; re union. Oley LeRoy and Richard Alan were home for the day. Oley has to return to camp after Christ mas. Newman, 68, of Eliott Prairie, died at a Salem hospital Wednes day night after a brief illness. -Newman, who made his home with his sister. Miss Anna New man, and brother, Arthur New man, of Elliot Prairie, had been a resident of this community for ne past year. He was born at Sioux Center, Minm, March 7, 1879. The family moved to east ern Oregon in 1936, . settling at Wilsonvilie, and later moving to Wallowa, Ore. - - rn . " , - Other survivors are two broth en and two sisters:, Gilbert New man, Elliott Prairie; Victor: New man, Joseph, Ore.; Mrs. Effie Klien and Mrs. Bertha Beachlor, both of Valentine, Neb. Community Meet Includes Program At Middle Grove ;; MIDDLE GROVE The' annual Christmas program by the school was presented Friday at the meet Ing of the community club.1 It comprised two plays, "The Toys Christmas' and "Christmas at Scrub Hollow, with readings, vo cal solos and group singing jbe tween acts. Christmas treats were distributed to children by 'the school board. Emory Goode fam ily was in charge of refreshments and table decorations. The com munity club will sponsor a chick en nipper January 18 from I to 8 p. m. There will also be a abort program. - Family Starts Work On New Residence LABISH CENTER Mr. and Mrs. Ed McClauJhry have begun work on their new home on the Pacific highway near Brooks. Former Silverton Woman is Visitor SILVERTON Miss rnga Thor kildson of Seattle spent Wednes day visiting her sister, Mrs. Jim Satrum and her former employ ers at the city water office and library. Miss Thorkildson has been with the navy department in civil service work almost since the beginning of the war. She was in Washington, D. C, for a time but for the past two years has been in Seattle. Her sister, Alice, has been with her in Seattle but left last weekend for Geneva, HI., where she Is to be married to Richard B. Burgeson, a veteran of two years with the army In Eng- Veterans Return land. , Both girls are daughters of Carl Jr or Holidays Thorkildson, now of Portland, but formerly of Silverton, and both are graduates of Silverton high school. Gilmour re turned to his home here Monday after being a patient In the Silver ton hospital where he underwent a major operation. Ift Is recover ing nicely. Robert Pletka is on a 30-day furlough from service at"the army air force base at Harvard, Neb., and arrived In Portland last Wednesday, meeting his mother. Mrs. Lucy Pletka, there. Together they came to Scio to spend Christ mas with relatives. Farmers Move to New Locations Mr. and Mrs. Carl IL Smith have sold their farm east of Scio and are preparing' to move to a place near Mehama, formerly owned by Ward Slovers, who moved to Idaho. J. V. Hornbuckle and wife and the letter's mother are now re siding on the farm recently pur chased from Mrs. J. B. Gordon, southwest of Scio. - Mrs. Gordon has been in Kansas several months caring for her mother, at Mc Fherson. The son, Joe, daughter, FloribeL and son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Mor gan, all moved to a place near Millersburg. Joe works at the Far mers Union warehquae at Jefferson. I CLASS PLAY GOOD SCIO The senior class play, "A Ready-Made Family," pre sented last week, was very well fiiven and pleased the large aud ience.
