Receives Good
Weekend Lift
NEW jYORK, Dec. 22-()-Short
covering; and reinstatement of
sold-out accounts gave selected
stocks a good lift today after the
market had staggered through a
generally losing week. t
From the start of the final ses
sion demand centered on motors,
eicvis, i cms, meuus, meruiiunais-
ers and. specialties. Transfers for
the two hours totaled 7 610,000
shares compared with 620,000 last
Saturday and were the smallest
since Sept. 22.
Aiding the automotive ; group
and sentiment elsewhere ws the
General Motors-union agreement
to resume negotiationns in an ef
fort to settle the strike, pividend
expectations were helpful.! Much
of the buying was predicated on
the idea the seasonal rally be-
tween Christmas and New; Year's
day would eventuate. This . has
happened in 43 of the past 47
years, j Principal securities ex
