Th 44th ia known ii the Vampire, and are part of General Barnes' 13th AAT fighter command of the Jungle air forced Th 13th air force la now garrUoning In the Philippines. The Vampires are credited with shooting down 169 Japanese air craft in battles from Guadalcanal to Rabaul, the Philippines, For toma, and the Dutch East Indies. The Vampires helped pave the way for the invasion of Borneo, by dive-bombing, skip-bombing, fire-bombing, and strafing the enemy in all parts of Borneo. lieutenant Free is the husband of the former Miss Evelyn J. Grif fith, of Thornton, Calif. He at tended Salem high School and graduated In June, 1940. He won his wings and commission at Wil liams Field. Ariz. Hardy, 1785 Norway sL, is en route home from the Far East air Force's 22nd replacement depot in Manila. A C-47 pilot with the 403rd troop carrier group. Lieutenant Hardy has logged 850 combat flying hours in over 200 missions while earing the air medal, two presi dential citations and five battle stars. Four Corners Service Men Plan Holiday Trip FOUR CORNERS The Goss- ers 1 have recently . heard from their' two sons in the service. Lt D. L. Gosser is expected home to spend the holidays with-his par ents and his wife and children. Lt Franklin T. Gosser is on his way to Yokohama as a chaplain with the army. PFC Bert Davis is expected home for Christmas after being in an army hospital in California since April. His brother Edward is also expected, home for the holidays. - Salem Man's Son Is romoted in Korea SEOUL, Korea, Nov. 30-(De- ayed)-Sgt Robert W. Smith, son of Ray Smith,; 570 N. Winter st. Salem, Ore- was recently pro moted from private first class, it was announced today. The 19- year-old communications sergeant of the 32nd regiment's anti-tank company was advanced In recog nition of his superior record in combat and service with the 7th infantry division here.
