Silver Star
For Heroism
Everett M. Joeckel, PhM lcr
US NR. whoM wife, Evelyn Joeck
el, lives in SaJem, now wears the
Silver , Star medal awarded him
for heroism while attached to a
marine artillery battalion, the
13th . naval district announced
Tuesday.
The presentation was made by
Cspt. Taul Wilson, commanding
ef fleer, UU.,' naval hospital, Cor
vsllls. Joeckel has previously been
warded two presidential citations
and has participated in actions at
Tarawa, Salpan and Tinian.
The citation reads as- follows:
"For heroism while attached to
a marine artillery battalion in ac
tion against enemy forces on Sal
pin, Marianas Islands, on 7 July,
'1944. During an enemy attack in
force, Pharmacist's Mate First
Class Joeckel brought an ambu
lance from the rear echelon and
volunteered to aid in the evacua
tion of the wounded. Throughout
the entire 12 hours of the battle
he repeatedly, with complete de
votion to duty, - crossed and r
erossed terrain which was being
swept by intense machine gun,
rifle and mortar fire. His courage
and disregard for his personal
safety were in keeping with the
highest traditions of the United
States naval service.
