I TURNER f Mervin Pearson, a fohner sergeant, T5 in the am phibian engineers of: the 2nd en gineer special brigade, was dis charged from the army at Fort LewisrOctober 31. ' j fin the service j 44 months, he spent ,32 months in Australia, New Guinea, -.Bismarck Archipelago, Philippine Islands, and Japan. Among souvenirs he brought home are a Japanese flag, gun and bay onet, sea shells, Japanese silk, fpreign money and Japanese in vasion monejr. His ribbons include the Ameri can ribbon, good conduct ribbon. Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with three battle stars, Philippine liberation ribbon with ja bronze arrowhead and two battle stars and the dis tinguished unit citation ribbon. SgL Loren L. $wenvold, son of Mrs. Mary Swenwold, 1740 Trade St., Salem, TOrej has been transferred from this! first air force base to a separation center to receive an honorablej discharge from the army air forjces. Sergeant Swenwold, a machin ist in civilian life, entered the ser vice Dec. 16, 1941. . He is married to j Mrs. Ida Swenwold, route 1, box 268, Sa lem, Ore; j MONMOUTH W a y n e, Petrie, 23, a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Egelston, is now recuperating-at Madigan General' hos pital, Ft. Lewis. He was freed in September from a prison in southern Japan and arrived in San Francisco October 16. His mother, Mrs. Letha Petrie f Lewiston, Ida met him there. Captured at the fall of Corre gidor, he worked every day in cluding Sundays in the Japanese coal mines. He received two bowls of rice and a cup of tea forhis daily diet. When first captured he was weighing 195 pounds. When he got to San Francisco he weighed 95 pounds. He spent more than two years in the pri son, and was released on his 23rd birthday. ' He is gaining weight now and otherwise improving, but doesn't, laugh or smile, Jret, his mother reports.-, A native of Monmouth he attended "schools here before the family moved to Lewiston. A sis ter, Mrs. Betty McDanieL lives at Lewiston; and ' one brother, Charles, is in the San Diego na val hospital recovering from an accident suffered .while in the naval . air , force. He lost ope eye I and his right knee was crushed. LIBERTY Harold Peterson has returned home following his dis charge from the army.
