U After the election day layoff yesterday, volume of 2,380,000 shares was the best since last June 28 and compared with 1,630,000 on Monday. The 1061 issues dealt in were the largest in modern history and compared with 1049 on May 14, 140, and 1045 on Sept 19, 1937. Of this total, 688 advanced, 213 declined and 180 were unchanged. Establishing summits for 1945 or longer were American Tele phone, up 4; Chrysler, up 55i; Montgomery ward, General Mo tors, Sears Roebuck and Union Pacific. A few stoclw, however, were down from tops for the ses sion. r . j - The , pressure to invest idle funds, prospects for "an improved tax situation for some companies in 1946 and the possibility of lim ited inflation were factors to the lire.
