PAGE TEN r- ? Tlx OREGON STATESMAN. Saltm, Ortgou, Tuesday Morning, October 23. 1945 " . 1 1 J ' . 7" 1 I r- ! : 1 1 ., . 1 , , r Grain Futures ? Sustain Rise - CHICAGO, Oct 22H;P)-Grain futures today sustained an ad- vance that 'began .Saturday, with all grains except corn climbing more than a cent a bushel under , stimulation of government demand i.- for cash wheat and reports the V government would entertain offers of oats at Duluth.- - Cash wheat and oats also were strong. Part of .the wheat futures '.' buying apparently was lifting of hedges against sale of 1,773,000 bushels of wheat to the govern- ' " ment in the northwest Saturday, L including 1,525.000 bushels of spring wheat and 250,000 bushels ".-'of winter grain. The government now has bought about 12,000,000 r bushels for export since Oct. 10. ..... Trade was restricted somewhat due to uncertainty over legislative developments. Traders had ex - pected ! President - Truman might . issue statement on wages and prices ! today, and that it . might ' give some clue on farm prices, but " it was announced the statement ; would be issued later. J Wheat closed H to 1H cents . - higher than the previous finish - December $1.7.5i-, corn was up V to Vi, December $1.18Vi, oats (, were ahead i to l'.i cent, De cember 63 rye was. Ts up r to ' down, December $1.59-1.58 r and barley was !k to lucent. higher, December ST.lo'i. Push Upward Noted iii Stocks NEW YORK, Oct. 22.-P)-Se-lected rails, industrials and utili : ties pushed; upward in today's stock market although demand was I relatively light and, many leaders suffered from negiect. Buying again was predicated mainly on the 'urge to employ idle investment funds, - inflation hedging, earnings, dividends, re eeding strikes and the improved ' outlook for reduced taxes. Some customers, however, trimmed com mitments of remained in the neu tral ranks. Trends stiffened in the final hour after considerable early ir regularity. Gains of 1 to 3 points were" well distributed at the close". - Transfers of 1,140,000 shares were the smallest for a full session since Sept. 27. They compared with 1, 730,000 Friday. The Associated Press 60-stock average was up .4 of a point at 72.8 where it was only one-tenth . under its recent 8-year peak. Of 931 issues 'appearing, 492 advanced n 247 declined. Peter Sturvesant lived 18 years of pleasant rural life on his Bowl ery farm after the British seized New York in 1664. Sturvesant, who said that in preference to ' surrender he "would " rather be carried out dead," was not allowed by his people to join battle.
