Ken Penner, the St Louis Cardi

was telling it during a visit here
this week . and , how figures he s
plate, bellered "Fair ball."
At that Penner galloped from
the dugout for debate, but was
halted by 'Frisco with the words:
"G'wan, I saw the chalk dust fly.
It lit right on the line."
"Oh, yeah?" yeahed Penner.
"Well, mister, you just let me
take you by the hand for a little
stroll to that 'chalk' line. Mebbe
somebody better tell you that
ain't no chalk line it's a board
painted white!"

stuck to his decision. But the
next day Penner saw him sneak
from the grandstand during early
batting drill, ankle up to the foul
line, take a long look and scratch
his head! "Guess I sure kicked

riors, bossed ly Bud Page, do not
come advertised as the same po

12 pounds per man in the starting
lineup and abundant reserves, the
Trojans rate six-point favorites.
But the Bruins, with 20 lettermen
back, are keyed high to win the

the speedy Bruins hope to equal

Vic Ghezzi, Atlantic City, NJ,
former Professional Golfers as
sociation champion, today added
his name to stellar entries in the
$14,333 ' Portland open which
starts next Thursday. Ghezzi,
Sgt Jim Ferrier of San Francis
co and Ky Lafoon, Chicago vet
eran, indicated they would come
straight to Portland. They were
unable to reach Spokane in time
for the $10,000 Esmerelda open.

vice will return to amateur and
professional ranks in rapidly in
creasing numbers. .
No one in an official capacity
would say definitely about the
tour being off for the world se
ries winner. Evidence was piling
up, however, that the need for
such a trip has greatly dimin
ished. Recreational and entertainment
programs will not be as urgently
needed as they were when the
tour was suggested. Baseball
leaders have had the navy's in
vitation under consideration' for
weeks. It was thought - that an
all-star team might be acceptable
but the navy stood pat on the
world series winner. '

crawled a bit closer to the lead
ing Chicago Cubs of the National
league Thursday night at St Louis
by blanking the. leaders, 2-0, and
slashing j their margin to two
games. Harry "The Cat" Brecheen
twirled the victory, a six-hitter,
and both clubs how have eight
games left to play on the sched

The only other National league
game saw Boston's Braves take a
3-2 decision over the Dodgers.
In the American league the
wobbling Washington , Senators,
who are rapidly running out of
games to play, had another nail
hammered into the coffin contain
ing their pennant hopes as they
lost to their old headaches,- the
Yankees,' 6-1. Detroit meanwhile
obliged by also losing 6-1 at
Cleveland but hold the one game
lead. j
