Hard red winter: 10 per cent 1.47V: Peace Plans Boost Rally in Stock Market NEW YORK, Aug. 23-)-The stock market today enjoyed one of its best rallies of the past sev eral ears as hopes for nearby postwar business prosperity in spired buying of durable goods issues and a wide assortment of rails. Gains ranged from one to five points for motors and other fav orites. Prices were trimmed here and there at the close but final plus marks running to better than four points predominated. Trans fers totaled 1,190,000 shares com pared with 760,000 in the preced ing session. Word that automotive interests were planning to lease the $96, 000,800 Willow Run,1 bomber plant at Detroit for the manufac ture of passenger cars and farm machinery helped the motor di vision. Quick moves of Washing ton to spur industrial transition lifted bullish sentiment. 1 The Associated Press 60-stock composite was up 1.2 points at 65.1, widest swing since Aug. 9 when a 1.3 advance was recorded which was the broadest since De cember, 1941. Scarce Goods Remain Under Price Control "All scarce commodities remain under strict price control. These include virtually every item fig uring in the cost of living." This was the advice given the public and business today by act ing district OPA director Frederic F. Janney in answer to numerous price control inquiries. "Only h few items have been exempteJ, such as high-priced fur coats, low-priced .toys and a few other minor items," Janney, de clared. ! "Still under control, for instance, are clothing, foodr gro ceries, restaurant prices, consum er services such as" laundry and cleaning, together with reiitals in all -federal rent control areas." Janney emphasized that remov al of price ceilings will come only when supply agencies "tell the OPA there is enough to go a round." 1 Recovery Still Noted in Grain CHICAGO, Aug. 23-0!P)-A re covery movement in grain futures went through its third straight day today, although some of the gains were shaded fractionally near the close. Rye and barley led with gains of more than 2 cents and 3 cents a bushel, respectively, at times. Continued reports of export de mand and poor European crops, and a strong New York stock market were bolstering influen ces, i j Barley advanced sharply on the announcement that Canada had banned additional exports of that cereal. Wheat closed V lower to higher than the previous finish, September $1.64Ut corn was un changed to M off, December $1.14Ht oats were unchanged to i lower, September 57 rye was ' off to 14 cents up, Sep ( tember $U7-V, and barley was 1 to cents higher, Septem i ber $100,. f CKASn KILLS It v BRIDGETOWN, .
