Spectacular Welcome Is V-Day The spontaneous welcome of V-day aboard a carrier in the south Pacific was "the most spec tacular sight I have ever seen,' Lt (jg) . Lawrence L. Epping write in a graphic account of the historic announcement. The lieutenant, one of four navy sons of Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Epping of 1925 Maple ave., Salem, for merly of Mt. Angel, is attached to the carrier Kula Gulf. His letter follows: "Wonderful news was Just heard officially. The war .is over. We heard it when we were all attend ing the movie on the hangar deck last night. Everyone rose with i thunderous roar. We all went up on the flight deck and I saw the most spectacular sight that I have ever, seen or ever hope to see as long as I live which looks to be to an old man now. ! "There are hundreds of ships in the harbor and all have from S to 25 spot lights, giant ones to pick ships out five miles away, These were all criss-crossing in a jet black sky. Every - colored flares were filling the sky com pletely; parachute flares, bursting rockets, smoke trails, every con ceivable kind. Everyone was yell ing, crying, singing, praying it affected everyone a little differ ently, I guess, but it is something that will always be clear in my mind. I shall never forget it If I could only describe one tenth of it,- it would sound unbelieva ble. "This is something to thank God for, so will you take $25 out of my next allotment and send it somewhere for Thanksgiving?" Nine to 12 pounds of raw mate rial are required to make one pound of aluminum. Dorris Jeane Cutler, U.S. CN, daughter of Sgt. and Mrs. Jack L, Cutler of 2270 Maple ave., is home on a 21 -day furlough from the Providence hospital.
