Hegberg, has been .discharged and is now at the home of his parents after 33 months overseas. A member of the Ninth field ar tillery, Third infantry division, he saw service in French Morocco, Tunisia, Italy, Sicily, Anzio, Rome, France, Germany and Austria. He wears the French Croix de Guerre with palm and fourragere; presi dential citation; Purple Heart med al; Bronze Star; Fifth army com merate medal for. entrance to Rome; good conduct medal; eight battle start and the bronze arrow head. It was his division that 'raised the flag over Berchteagaden and he brought home the German flag from Hitler's palace. He entered the service December, 1941. Heg berg is the fourth generation of his family to engage in war a gainst Germany. , Cpl. Stanley Hegberg, a broth er, is also on his way home from England,-where he is a clerk in the quartermaster department of the Eighth army air corps." He has been overseas for 34 months, and was inducted in March, 1943. Recently he vas sent to a rest camp in Belgium, "The Spa." A few days were spent in Brussels and of that city h writes that it seemed the most f American-like of any European I city he had seen. If the signs through out the city had not been in Flemish it would have been like a visit to a home city. One sees American cars, hears music in English and most everyone speaks English fluently. When the re turned to Germany he was trans ferred to another' division and the training keeps them almost as busy as war days. Marion Hoblitt, prisoner of war l Friday, Major Brewer called at the Sheler home where the pres- the Japanese in Tokyo, sent his mother, Mrs. John Hoblitt, a greet ing on his own; birthday. The message was broadcast as part, of his program as the "Postman" for American prisoners of war on Honshu island. Mrs. Hoblitt got the message over short wave. Corporal Hoblitt said ho was well and looking forward to spend ing his next birthday In Silver ton. He mentioned receiving a letter from Mrs. jL. R. Sawyer of Silverton and from Mrs. Henry Glaze (Margaret; Keene) of Spo kane, as well as from his brother. Hol lin, S3, fire controlman 37c, USNR, of rout 2, Silverton, Ore., has been commended by bis command ing officer for "cool and efficient performance of; duty" during a Jap air attack off the beaches of Okinawa. 1 The destroyer was at tacked by four planes April f : Two 1 Guardia were driven off but the two others I aboard pressed in suicide runs. Wood, Lebanon,' Ore. He has completely recovered from his injuries and has returned to duty. Wood, a coxswain. Is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Wood, East Isabella st, Lebanon. His wife, the former Phebe Steams, lives in AumsviUe, Ore. . i ...... DALLAS SSrt Kenneth Plummer has received his dis charge and Is now at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Plummer. Plummer served 32 months with Co. L, in the south west Pacific. Last October he was returned to the states and reassigned to Camp Livingston,. So say postal officials at Thir teenth Naval District heaqusrters. who are already witnessing tie in creasing flow of Christmas back- ages pouring through west (coast postal distribution centers to: navy men, coast guardsmen and: ma rines in the Pacific. And the navy heartily approves this arl7 bird rush. "Mail your Christmas parcels to navy personnel now. Don't wait until fall,N is the burden of their plea to all of us at home, j And here are some important tips that most people don't know: (1)' You don't have to iHow letter of request from a navy coast guardsman or marine In or der to man him gift at any! (2) You can mail packages any time you want to. The navy has no set Cru-istmas-package-mailmg time, but urges you to mail pack ages regularly throughoutf the year. (It is the army that sets aside September 15-October li for Christmas mailing.) ;, j : If you think August-to-Decem-ber sounds like a long time, re member that the navy is busier this year sending food, ammuni tion and other supplies to the Pa cific than it has ever been before, and ships and planes are crowded with war-vital materials.
