PAGE SLITLLN j The OREGON STATESMAN. Salem. Oregon. Sunday Morning. July 15. 1945 Word: Encouramnir on Wliite Shirts; Lower Points Seen As Possibility for Discharge By th Washington Staff of jtho Associated Ptcm I WASHINGTON, July MHVNote to President Truman and thousands of other- men having trouble finding white shirts: , ; The war production board predicts a decided Improvement In supply by October, and an even better situation, by the' first of the year. In the meantime, though, the shortage will remain acute. ' Improving .the long-range shirt-tail outlook is release by tpe military of 3,000,000 yards of ox-' : ; t ' V' . , ford cloth which will go Into pro- -oomph" to make his cabinet tim 'duction of white shirts and shorts late this quarter. i RnidM. K rerortedVr is anx- This windfall Is In addition tojlous to f et out of government as supplies of cotton broadcloth al ready earmarked for shirts under the government's inex pensive clothing program. - ( I ! : - I Lower Points: The army expects to announce a new point system for the discharge of troops late this month and indications are that the total required will be lowered. j (There are many soldiers at Camp Adair with more thari the presently-prescribed 85 points, and bewilderment has been expressed as to why if points. are to be lowered still further those not In essential work are still kept In the army). Home Team: There's still a good chance that permanent headquar ters of the United Nations secur ity organization will be -in the United States. Delegates from to the San Franjcisco conference said informally that they liked the I "general climate they considered many countries over here, that the U. S. A. a good central location with respect to both east end west, and that they thought thi4 nation's leader ship toward framing the charter Was still another point. ' j Ickes Next?: Some high officials ithink President Truman will act (promptly after the big three meet ing to replace Secretary of the Interior Harold Iickes. Early speculation that WPB Chairman J. A. Krug i would get j the Ickes post dwindled i away. Word is being passed that Krug, despite a good administration rec ord, has not enough political soon as production for the Pacific war is on a safe basis and recon version well started. Some of his aides would not be surprised to see him leave this fall. Big Job Open: One of the most baftling-questions In a long time isfwho will succeed Fred Vinson as war mobilizer when Vinson takes over Secretary Morgenthau's treasury portfolio? Senator George (D-Ga) contin ues to be mentioned as frequently as anybody. . ' x '' So big is the job, and so few are the qualifying candidates, that some people think Vinson will hang on to his present title after he becomes treasury secretary. Most officials say this Is unlikely because the two Jobs are too com plicated for anyone man. But the argument is that for a while Vin son could concentrate on being director of the office of war mob ilization and reconversion, and leave much of the treasury duties, to Undersecretary Daniel W. Bell. Pen for Protocol: There's some talk that if Assistant Secretary of State Archibald MacLeish is un seated in the expected departmen tal shake-up, MacLeish may be just as well pleased. It's reported that poet MacLeish would like to devote more time to writing than he has in recent years. Lear to Retire?: Lieut. Gen. Ben Lear, former chief of the army ground forces and later a deputy to Eisenhower in Europe is com ing home soon, and the Impres sion around the Pentagon is that In charge of Dr. Fred Pageler, Registered Optometrist: Associ at Registered Optometrists: Dr. M. A;TVA' for China: A Yangtze valley authority for the great river that' cuts China in half on an east west line appears to be one of thef great industrial postwar de velopments destined for the far east.
