Officials to Fight Western Plant Pests Several resolutions of interest to Oregon horticulturalists were passed at the recent meeting of the western plant board in Boise Idaho, according to Frank Mc Kennon, chief, of the ".division of plant industry of the state ' de partment of agriculture. McKennon was elected chair man of the board for the new year. Other officers are George Knight of Montana, vice-chair man; George. Schweiss, Nevada, secretary-treasurer; and Herbert Gates, Colorado, retiring presi dent, representative on the na tional plant board. Members are plant quarantine officials of the 11 western states, Mexico, Brit ish Columbia and Hawaii, Two resolutions urged continu ation of the cooperative suppres sive program against pear psyHa as the best known method to de lay spread of this insect to im- portant pear-growing areas and continuation of the present Eur veys to determine distribution of the oriental fruit moth. Both proj ects are being carried on by the federal bureau of entomology and plant quarantine in cooperation with the various states. Another resolution favored ini tiation of a $250,000 program by the federal department of agricul- hire to acquire information and knowledge of newly introduced and or potential insect and plant disease pests of limited distribu tion. A fourth asked the postmas ter general to continue the rejec- of plant materials offered for mailing in violation of inter- state plant quarantines. Wheat, Rye, Most Grains j Close Higher C7 CHICAGO, June 29-JP)-Wheat and rye rallied more than a cent a bushel during the final hour of futures trading today and most other markets finished on the up side. Price trends changed frequent ly during the session and analysts attributed the late upturn to the strength of wheat which was supported by purchases of flour millers. Quotations dipped sharply be fore noon when the buying paus ed and sentiment was affected by the lower stock market The break uncovered resting orders and during the late trade little grain was for sale, Hedge selling was apparent in tne wbeat market but it was more than offset by milling pur chases, made to lift hedges fol I lowing flour sales. At the finish wheat was to higher than yesterday's close. July $1.66ifc-. Corn was un changed to higher, December $1.17 V. Oats were up to July 66T.-67. Rye was to 1 higher, July $1.53-. Barley was unchanged to down Va, July $1.12'i. Stocks Rally Weakly on N.Y. Market NEW YORK, June 29-()-The stock market made an effort to regain its stability today but was only partly successful. There was a smattering of mod- est plus signs at the close. Trans fers of 2,020,000 shares compared 1 with yesterday's five-year peak of 2,940,000. I customers were a bit more 1 courageous on the idea liquidation may have been overdone in the 1 preceding session, oears suit were plentiful, however, as the belief persisted tnat Washington was preparing to crack down on spe culation. The Associated Press 60-stock average was off -.6 of a point at 68 and had wiped out virtually all of its advance of the preced ing two weeks. OT A DpplirPQ I Vl .
