Betrothal of . i Miss Luella Nichols I The engagement of Miss Luel- ' la Nichols, daughter of Mrs. Cass A. Nichols, to Mr. Donald Gene Wilson, son of Mrs. Harvey O. ' Witzig of Santa Barbara, Calif and Mr. Wilfred Wilson of Brem- erton, was revealed at a smart ly arranged buffet supper Tues day night at the country home of the bride-elect's mother. No date has been set for the wed ding. " The buffet table was centered ! with an arrangement of pastel garden flowers. Dinner was serv-" ed in the garden. Records were played during the evening and one, in the form of a letter to the groom-to-be, told : of the couple's engagement Bidden to the announcement party were Miss Wanda Ring land, Miss Betty Hill, Miss Mar cella Wolfe, Miss Betty Lou Kay ser, Miss Lillian Kayser, Miss Pauline Riensche, Miss Goldie Hagil, Miss Marilyn and Miss Coral ee Nichols, Miss Joyce Arm strong, Mrs. Henry Kayser, Mrs. F. Ring and, Mrs. Edwin Arm Strong, Mrs. J. A Hain, and Mrs. Cass A. Nichols. . ' Miss Nichols and her fiance graduated from' Salem high school in May. She is now em ployed at Bones teele Sales and Service Inc. Mr. Wilson left fpr the army last week. Miss Nichols just returned from a two weeks trip to Cali fornia where she visited her fi ance's mother u Santa Barbara, and with her uncle and aunt, . Commander and Mrs. Madison, Nichols, in Alameda. Miss Ni chols also visited in Hollywood and Los Angeles. Miss Smith Takes Office- Rev. Dudley Strain, pastor of the First Christian church, pres ident of the Ministerial associa tion was the. speaker at the reg ular monthly dinner meeting of the Business and Professional Women's club at the Golden Pheasant Tuesday night For his topic Mr. Strain chose "An Op tion on Tomorrow." He empha sized the fact that we as individ uals have little importance ex cept when allied to an ideal in sufficient numbers we become all-powerful. With this Idea in mind he went on to say that plans for world peace are prac tical and workable if we cling to the central theme and do not allow ourselves to be swayed from our purpose by small pres sure groups, intolerances or pre-' judices. Mr. Strain's topic was partic ularly well chosen since it was applicable not only to world peace plans but to BPWs own club plans for the coming year. New officers were installed at an impressive candlelight cere mony in which each incoming officer lit her candle from th Club flame" and recognized her obligation to work for the unity and harmony of the group. Miss Ida Mae Smith, newly installed president of the club, assured Mr. Strain, that 'the group Is anxious to secure the ideal of world peace In the option on post-war tomorrow. Other officers installed were Mrs; Carmalite Waddle, first vice-p resident; Mrs. Marion Wooden, second vice-president; Miss Mildred Yetter. recording secretary; Miss Martha Fischer, corresponding secretary; Miss Cecilia Woodruff, treasurer, Mrs. Anna Morgan and Miss Elda Dodrill, directors. Music wss furnished by Don na Jane Macklin and her violin accompanied by Frances Baum, Both were dinner guests of the club. Other dinner guests were Rev. and Mrs. Dudley Strain nd Mrs. Dorothy Taylor. Three new members were ad mitted, Mrs. Helen Richards, Mrs. Erma Horn Bywater and Mrs. Mabel Hayles. After a wedding trip the couple will be at home in Salem. (Jesten-Miller). , Wedding at Harvard Chapel . The wedding of Miss Marjorie Watkins, daughter of Mrs. John Wagner of Route 2 and Mr. W. P. Watkins, Portland, and Ensign Thayne W. Cole, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Martin Cole, Tacoma, was solemnized in Cambridge, Mass, on May 19. The cere mony was read by the navy chaplain in the chapel on the Harvard campus. The bride wore a princess style street length dress of white, and a corsage of white orchids. Ens. and Mrs. Sheldon Coon attended the couple. Mrs. Coon more a blue and white dress, and a gardenia corsage. Mrs. Wagner, who went east for her daughter's marriage, and navy friends of the groom, were the only ones present at the cer emony. The bride attended Salem high school and graduated from Laurelwood academy. She was. employed at the state highway department before going east for her wedding. The groom attended Walla Walla college and Gonraga, grad uated from Cornell university and is now attending Harvard university. " He is in radio work with the navy. . Ens. and Mrs. Cole wQl live . Rose man of Route U Salem, was sol emnized in- Chehalis. The dou ble .ring ceremony was perform ed Saturday night, June 23, at the parsonage of the First Chris tian church. . ; The bride . is a graduate of Winlock, Wash high schooL . The groom is a graduate of Salem high school and is a tor pedoman second class. , He ; re cently returned home after 20 months on a destroyer in the south Pacific. Following a honeymoon at the beaches, the couple will live in San Diego while Mr. Roseman is taking a special training course in advanced torpedo schooL . t- 7 i -r 23, 1943 Miss Stupfel Weds in Texas Miss Carole Stupfel, daughter of' Mr. and Mrs. C J. Stupfel of Salem, became the bride of Sergeant Harold Fullwood, son of Mrs. Maude Fullwood of Or-; land, Calif, on May 29 at the post chapel at Camp Howze, Texas. Father E. Clark, post chaplain, performed the double ring ceremony at 7:15 o'clock." Mrs. Kathryn Stuval played . the wedding marches. Corporal J. Craigie sang "Ave Maria' and "Oh Lord I Am Not Worthy. The bride was given in mar riage by Colonel E. Dawley, who was commander of the groom's battalion with the 41st division. ; For her wedding the bride chose a watermelon red suit J- with ; brown accessories and a corsage of sweetpeas. She wore a cross and chain which belonged to her grandmother and carried her mother's white prayer book. ' Miss Irene Stupfel, who accom panied her . sister south, was the maid of honor. She wore a brown suit with gold accessories and a sweet pea corsage. Mr. Paul Wohlbruck was best man. He has accepted a position with the Dairy Coopera tive association. Mr. Fullwood was with the 41st division in the South Pacific for 34 months, returning to the states, last win ter. ' . J Junior Club ; Picnic Slated - Salem Junior Woman's club members and guests will enjoy a picnic dinner Friday night in the garden of the home of Mrs. W. Gerald Nibler on Claxter road. The no-host affair .will begin at 6:30 o'clock. : This will be the last social meeting of the year for the group. After the dinner hour bridge and croquette will be in. play. Private and Mrs. Daryl G run den are visiting at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Matbis on the Portland Road. The young couple have just re turned from a stay of eight months at Scott Field, Illinois. Private Grunden has completed AAF courses in the radio oper ator mechanic and the army air ways communication system ra dio schools. Mrs. Grunden has been em ' ployed as a stenographer by the civilian personnel division at the army air base at Scott Field.
