Bassien Gets Bronze Star Medal for Valor MONMOUTH Second LL Rich ard V. Basiien jr has been awarded the bronze star medal for courageous and intelligent service in action In Germany. Lieutenant Bassien, a member of a field ar tmexy squadron, maintained a listening post by night and obser vation post by day while his squadron was holding a thin line in the vicinity of Borg, between Dec. 24 and 31, 1944. His citation states that his performance was marked by outstanding bravery, perseverance, skill and devotion to duty, reflecting credit upon himself and the United States army. Bassien, who was graduated from Monmouth high school in 1938, and attended Oregon Col lege of Education, made his home here with friends, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Graham and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Calbreath. In his. most recent letter home he stated that due to foe troubles he was as signed to observation work ex clusively for a time. Joeckel, who now is on duty at the Corvallis hospital, is a gradu att of the Gaston, Ore., higi school and formerly was employed in Salem. He was overseas 2f months with the 2nd marine di visions ; His citation said that, in aiding in the evacuation of wounded men in the battle area of Saipan, Joeck el "repeatedly, with complete de votion to duty, crossed and re! crossed terrain which was being swept by intense machine gun, ri fle and mortar fire." MONMOUTH Elmer Bork, navy, who has been at the Great Lakes naval training station for mare than a year, is home this week, called here by word of his father, Ed Bork s serious illness.
