Crooks, liquor commission member, tes tified at a legislative bearing ... Monday. Collin also bought back 10.000 barrels (of the total of about 70,-1 000 acquired by Oregon and Washington) at book prices also a stipulation made in advance, Crooks said. He 'added that the whisky so obtained' was ;Mvery fiood merchandise,' and' that the commission would be "tickled to get more if we could." j He said the commission had A traded about 5000 barrels of straight whisky . for blended whisky." The 5000 barrels would have made bout 73,000 cases, but In the trade the commission ob tained, about 125,000 cases a net stock Increase of 50,000 cases, he testified. Robert Fischer Arrives to Join Staff of KSLM Robert Fischer, Jr., recently on the staff of the Eugene Register Guard, was in Salem today to take over his duties as head of public relations and advertising for, radio station KSLM. His appointment to succeed William Talbot, who accepted a post in Omaha, was announced last week by Glenn McCormick, KLSM owner. . Fischer, who is married, widely known in radio and news paper circles of Oregon. He is i member of the Elks and currently is Loyal Knight of the Eugene lodge: a member of Knights of Pythias; district governor of dis trict 36 E Lions international; im mediate past president of the Ore gon Republican clubs, recently re signed as secretary, of the Lane county republican central com mittee. Previously,; the house passed measures boefsting the salary of the ; state school, superintendent from. $4000 tdi$5400 and the labor commissioner jfrore $4000 to $5000. Rep. John Steelhantmer of Mar Ion county, chairman: of the com mittee on reorganization and ad ministration which reported out do j pass" recommendations, de clared the salaries were not aimed for specific persons but that the house was "voting n what the offices and duties of this state call for.? -: Rep. Warren Erwin of Portland said the officials now were "pret ty well paid,, and said he "shud dered" to think what the elector ate would think of i such ' salary raises. Steelhammer in closing the argument said Multnomah county officers wouli receive as much as $6000 and don't think there's any ; shuddering eve? . that." RCp. Joseph Harvey of Portland opposed the increases, cited seven eenerais and s admirals who re ceive $8000, and declared that while California salaries were higher "California has' seven times the population of Oregon." Rep. Ralph Moore of Bandon declared that the state officers were required to spend far; more than Just their salaries, and would continue to do so even with the raises recommended, because of the demands made on them.
