Salem's swimmers have been
averaginf approximately one-halt
mile a day thus far, with several
swimmers doing two miles or over.
Dorsey Caspell and Gordon Sloan
are still tied for the longest daily
distance, each having maintained
daily record of over two miles.
If they continue the pace, they will
each receive the -prize offered by
the Salem Y f or the longest daily
distance:.-'-
The local association is offering
a dinner "on the house" to all
those swimming a mile a day for
10 out of the 12 contest days.
These swimmers wlil also receive
a special recognition certificate
from the contest headquarters.
Those qualifying so fat are Don
McCracken, Bill Olinger, Edwm
Bauer, Oliver Boline, i Sanf ord
Weinstein, Darrel Lawrence, John
Hinkle, John Taylor, Earl Pepper,
Gordon Sloan, Dorsey Caspell, Bill
Allison, and David Boone. Those
in addition who did at least a mile
on Friday were Dorothy Bergsvik,
Loris Harriott, Shd Patricia Fair.

Staats gladdened the 2500 with a
burst of 'speed which caught the
fleeing Gerkman on the Salem 47
Four plays later Staats intercep
ted -an OC pass himself and op
ened the way for another Salem
score from the OC 44. It was in
the fourth frame now and Oregon
City, desperate on her 27, tried a
pass. But there was alert Staats
again, to spear it, and down the
north sidelines he scooted with the
third Vik 8-pointer, a 40-yard gal
lop in all. .The conversion failed.
The Viks, hot to win this one for
sure and battling all the way from
the time they woke up in the sec
ond period, romped 180 yards on
the ground and added 59 through
the air for a yards-gained net total
of 234, Oregon City maneuvered
for 94 and 18, lost 31 and wound
up with a net 81. In first downs
it was 11-4 for SHS
