M-j Martin, RFD 2, Box 115, SaJem, Ore- is an ar morer with this outstanding or ganization which : participated ; In the first bomber attack on Italy, the first low-level attack on FIo- esti, the allied attack on nazl targets in the Rome area, and fi nalljr the invasion, of southern France. - - On the average, an operational xnusion was flown - every, other day. In that time 13,000 tons of bombers were dropped on enemy targets, roughly 15,000,000 gallons of gas were used to transport 6163 B-25's over 10,003,950 miles. In this vast endeavor more than 30,' 000 man hours of flying time were logged. The group is the proud possess or of two presidential citations and a score of commendations. Thompson, - former Silverton boy now serving in the VS. army ; In Italy, has been promoted from ser geant to technical sergeant, ac cording to a recent announcement from his unit headquarters. Sgt. Thompson enlisted in the army In August, 1942. He is the brother of Orlo Thompson and Mrs. Joe Clancy, both of Silverton.; His mother, Mrs. Christine Thompson now lives at Salem. Terrell, Jr., secretary of state, announced Monday the apportionment of $2,500,000, the October, half of the annual total of $3,000,000 of state school support funds, among the Oregon counties. The fund is derived from state income taxes and -is apportioned on the basis of total number of days of actual attendance of rest dent pupils in the public element ery and high . schools in each county. ' t t ". . Multnomah, largest county in the state, received $817,120.78 of the October apportionment. ' Lane county was second with $171, 913.45. Disabled Vets Minus Smokes; Legion Bucks Members of Capital post No. S, American Legion, became hostile last night while discussing reports that bed-ridden veterans of World war I, their buddies, in the Veter ans hospital at Portland were out of cigarettes, couldn't get up to get them, and couldn't get them if they could get up because none were available in the hospital canteen. After an hour's fiery discussion. during which members suggested all sorts of methods to locate the ciearets. the post voted $25 to buy cigarets and named a secret com mittee to beg, borrow or get- smokes for .their t helpless com rades. The American Legion aux iliary was named as the agent for collecting the cigarettes and de livering them next Sunday. Commander . B. E. Owens was directed by the post to select four or five business houses, strategic ally located, where receptacles could be Disced and where it was hoped Marion county smokers would give 4up one package eaca for the ailing and disabled nf the first war. - Plans also were put under way for an armistice day celebration. The veterans decided an celebra tion should be held as an indica tion to the youthful soldiers of this war that "they are not xignt ing in vain, to be forgotten after 25 years." On December 8 - the Marlon county council, all posts, will hold a meetinsr in Salem. On October 29 officers of all posts In Lgion District No. 2, department of ore- son, will meet in Salem. District No. 2 Commander Percy Barber, of Newburg will be at the meet ing. He was a visitor at the meet In last nieht Salem's quota for membership this year has been, set at 720 by national headquarters. Command er Owens announced 186 of these members had been-signed. To pep un future activities Owens an nounced that Lloyd Demarest had hm1 named chairman of the en- tertainment committee.
