ANGEL - There was a lull in the mad hop picking : scramble this week end. The Am an - Walker crew have a two week layoff between the fuggles, harvesting of which was com pleted last week, and the late hops which will not be ready un til after -Labor, day. . The Wellman hop fields, known as the Butte Orchards, discontin ued picking Friday and Saturday but will resume work Monday. The only , large yards where picking was underway Saturday are those of the abbey, usually referred to as the college yards Here they are besieged for work by the pickers lrom the other yards all of whom have to be turned away since their own crew is larger than' needed. , All ; the growers ; hereabouts .seem to have more pickers than needed. Work is usually shut - down early in the afternoon. S As a general rule pickers claim they make less than last year, it seems a common thing to have them announce wages of ten dol lars and better in spite of the early closing down. Man Injured As Shed Falls f MISSION BOTTOM Picking of hops, peaches, beans and top .ping of onion seed are jdl in full swing now. . Threshing is about over. Prunes and nuts 'will be "next to attract the workers' at tention. , ' When'crc Russell puVhiToh Jon seed in his new shed, the shed collapsed ' catching "Shorty" Rus sell and breaking two ribs. A boy whose name was not learned, was caught for 20 minutes while men worked to get him out but he was uninjured. The strength of the cotton market discouraged liquidation and trade sources said they did not expect large quanti ties of rye to be tendered on Sep tember contracts. ; September wheat, after leading the advance of last week, dipped slightly under profit taking .while the deferred contracts were up. as much as three quarters of a cent. , At the close wheat was ft lower to higher than Saturday's fin ish, September $1.554. Oats' were unchanged to . higher, Septem ber 69. Rye was up to 1V4, September $1.08. Barley was lower to 4 higher. Trade sources said that a scarc ity of wheat prevails in the local market despite the record crop and that little is available for delivery on September contracts. The shortage was attributed to CCC purchases, and, the government loan program. ; Silverton Turkeymen Report Birds Marked SILVERTON Mr. and .
