II. 1844 Feed Market Remains Firm On Feed markets at Portland and ' other AVest Coast terminals contin ued to display a firm tone during; the week ended August 8. accord ing to reports to the War Food Ad- ministration. Demand continued , good for market offerings of wheat millfeeds and high protein ron- - centrates, although somewhat less aggressive' than few months -ago. Wheat feeds held at the establish ed ceilings on all items. .. High protein feeds also remain ed unchanged for the period with : prices at ceilings on those items for which maximums have been established. ' The Index number off wholesale feedstuff prices, for the country as a whole remained unchanged at 194.0 compared with 187.6 for the corresponding week - last season. ' Consumption of ground grain for feed increased materially dur ' ing the past season due to heavier feeding and large number of live stock. Although preliminary es timates placed the production of millfeed for the season ended June 30, at 6 Vi per cent above the rec ord of the previous, season, the supply has not been equal to de mand and feeders have used large quantities of ground grain to sup- - plement wheat offal. Ground grains are richer in food value but are also more expensive than millfeeds. With larger sup plies of some grains this season, prices have dropped below ceiling levels while millfeeds remain at the ceilings. , ' The average price of ground wheat at the principal distributing markets early ' in . August ' was $59,35 per ton, or about 40 per cent above the average price of $42.30 per ton for bran at the same mar kets.. Ground wheat made from C.C.C. grain averaged $52.15 per ton, or 23 per cent above bran prices. ' y Ground oats at $59.50 per ton is 41 per cent above bran prices, while ground barley at $60 50 per ton is 43 per cent above. ' Average price of ground rye is $46.75 per ton or 18 per cent more than the price of bran.
