Funeral services werej wia J-Tiday, with burial in Wil lamette Memorial park. Mrs. Cala van had been in failing health for a number of years, although only recently she had been able to be on the street Born in Albany on August 4, 1886, Vida C ; Nanney was the daughter of the late James B. Nan ney and Edith Wrenn Nanney, early residents of Oregon. She was married to Virgil L. Calavan in Albany in 1812, and they spent their entire married life in Albany. Mrs. Calavan was a member of the Presbyterian church. -j . - . Survivors are. the widower; one daughter, Mrs. Edith Crieghton; her mother, Mrs. Edith ; Nanney, and one sister, Blanche Nanney, all of Albany, and another sister, Mrs. Lone Locke, formerly of Cor vallis but now living in Honolulu : ALBANY Funeral, services for Mrs. Mary Jirka, 66, a resident of the Scio community for the last six weeks, who died in the Albany uenerai hospital July 23, were ' held Thursday. Concluding servic es were at Mount Crest Cremato rium,' Salem. Mrs. Jirka had been ' in the hospital 11 days. . More Workers Are Sought I By Cannery SILVERTON Twice as many workers are needed at the Royal . Canning Co. cannery. Percy Pal f reyman, manager, said Friday. . - Sixty five men and women are on full time at present while at least 130-are needed and there is : a special need for men, Pafrey man said.' '. , The cannery is running a day . shift but would- like to put on a night shift if sufficient employes can be rounded up. While 'only full time workers, have been used so far, part time workers will be used if sufficient full time em ployes cannot be had. .The bean harvest is just un derway at Silverton and bean growers, are reporting a shortage of pickers. Eastman bells To Salem Firm SILVERTON L. C. Eastman disposed of his interest in the East man Bros., , Inc., , he revealed 'Thursday, and it was understood that his brother, Austin Eastman, junior partner in the firm, was negotiating for the sale of his in terest ' , 1 - " V- D. E. Cooper & Son, Salem, is the new owner. Donald Cooper, the son, will manage the Silverton plant. Mr. Eastman has not an nounced his plans, other than that he will remain with the firm for a period of time as consultant on contracts already under way. Mr. Eastman came here in 1908 and his brother joined him four years later. During his time here he has served as mayor six terms. Silverton Water . Cut Suggested ' Over Weekend SILVERTON T. L. Blust, city water superintendent, has asked city water users to refrain from irrigating lawns and gardens over the weekend. L. Blust, city water superintendent for the past three years, has notified city offi cials of his resignation to take place August 1, Mayor Reber Al len admitted Friday. Mr. Blust has not given out his future plans, and the city council has not yet met to act upon the resignation. Mr. Blust took the place of El gin McCleary as superintendent when he resigned about three years ago to go to the Portland shipyards. Prior to that Mr. Blust was assistant superintendent for a number of years under Mr. McCleary- During the past few weeks Mr. Blyst has put in a great deal of overtime because cf the loss of his assistant, Leonard Strobel, who was called into army service. City officials stated that as yet they had not engaged anyone to take Mr. Blust's place. O'Donnell Rites onm MONMOUTH Graveside serv ices Were held at Fir Crest ceme tery here July 19 for Mrs. J. F. O'Donnell of Boise, Idaho, who died July 13 at a Portland hos pital. She had been suffering from a heart ailment for some time. A daughter of the late Orville Butler of Monmouth, Nellie But ler was born October 20, 1869, at Baker. She married J. F. O'Don nell at Cheney, Wash., in 1889. He operated a hardware store in Independence for many years. Surviving are three brothers, Dr. Frank Butler, Portland; Dean Butler.s Oregon City, and Vance Butler of California, besides her daughter, Mrs. Ellen Dourte of Boise, with whom she had lived in recent years. Services were in charge of Adah chapter of the Eastern Star, with Rev. Ralph Waggoner of In dependence ; officiating," directed by J. P. Finlay and Sons funeral home of Portland. District Sunday School To Meet Sunday at Scio JEFFERSON The district Sunday school convention will be held at the Scio Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Sunday schools will go to Scio immediately following the morn ing services for a basket dinner. The afternoon meeting will in clude a song service,' devotions, special numbers, a guest speaker, and business meeting. . i t A children's service is also planned.
