Many habitues of the financial sector left Friday with the inten tion of remaining away until Wed nesday inasmuch as major ex changes will recess Tuesday for the Washington's birthday celebration. Prices were ragged from the start, and at the close, the Asso ciated Press average - was un changed at 50.9 but on the week showed a net advance of .4 of a point The rail composite, how ever, was off .1 for the short ses sion although holding a' gain of .9 for the six-day stretch at around the best mark since last July. Dealings were relatively slow. Transfers- totaling 346,103 shares compared with 310,240 two weeks ago. The preceding Saturday was a holiday. Buying came from both local traders and commission hou ses and was attributed in part to previous short sellers who had decided the recent slump discount ed bearish elements in the grain picture The advance in rye was accom panied by rumors that progress was being made in efforts to use this grain : for industrial alcohol production, but there was no def inite news to support the rumors. Wheat 'traders were impressed by the fact that cash prices had not slumped with futures over recent sessions. . :.
