Members of State-Wide Association of Presidents and Secretaries of Oregon Chambers of Commerce Meeting in Salem Monday and Today OUNDED in New York in 1J6S and incorporated by a royal charter in 1770, Chamber of Commerce num ber one was born. Since that time every city of fair size and importance in the United States has given J ' ' ' : - birth to the spirit of organized community service by establishing their own local Chamber of Commerce. ! Perhaps is it well to pause here to give some thought to the state of Oregon Chambers of Commerce. Particu larly while the state association of secretaries and managers of these civic institutions are convening in their capital city. For instance, let us view the man and woman hours of service in the official family of t h e Salem Chamber of Commerce, which by the rules and by-laws, is dedicated to promote a just and lawful commerce and to encourage civ Ic and commercial enterprise for the citizens of Salem pnd surrounding communities. Add all personnel composed of office staff, board of directors, committee chairmen and workers of the Cham bers of commerce throughout Oregon,! and we are amazed at the grand total of man and woman power made available to the citizens of our state in whichever form of service the occasion may demand. This panorama of the civic industries of Oregon becomes doubly significant, when attention is focused upon :' ' ' . j i i the operating cost of this vast chain of civic institutions,, and in this respect one can hold firm to the faith in the pres ervation of our American way of life, for we find that all service is free to the citizens at no cost to the taxpayers. A' great per cent of this service is rendered by public citizens, who s e r v e as directors and committee workers, and are compensated for their efforts by the sole realization that no city can bloom to its f u 1 1 possibilities without a certain I I ' - i i amount of unselfish human energies injected into the veins of its potential field of endeavor. With the expert staff of secretaries and managers these membership groups of business and profession inter- ests in the cities throughout Oregon can well be proud of the part they have played in helping to build their commiuu ties and their state. Your Chamber of Commerce is worthy of your support. Well organized effort combined with your support will reflect a better and greater city in which you live. Boost your city!
