In Pro Markets Go ramies The OREGON STATESMAN, Salem Oregon. Tuesday Morning, Norember 17, 1942 f rop J m rov l w lraae Average Off .3 Point To 40.2; Selling V Stems Recovery NEW YORK, Nov. lS--The stock market got off on the wrong foot Monday and leaders gener ally stumbled to moderatelyr low er levels in the slowest proceed lngs of the month to date. Brokers attributed the stand offishness of custodiers partly to the cloudy situation in the Solo mons and the desire .to await out come of the battles in north Af rlca. In addition, enough, yearend tax selling persisted to stem re covery tendencies in the majority of cases., i The list was ragged at the op ening. The war-peace theme waned appreciably as an argu ment for either the bears or the bulls and stocks in both groups save eround. While scattered gainers were in evidence at the close, declines of fractions to a point or so were the rule. The Associated Press average o 60 stocks was off .3 of a point at 40.2,, biggest setback for this com posite . since October 27. Despite blocks of low-priced issues, in cluding 10.700 Packard and 9000 Curtis Publishing, transfers fell to 521,190 shares, a low mark for five hours since October 30. They com cared with 665.940 Friday. Du Pont directors voted a $1 dividend, same as in the previous Quarter, and the stock was oil 7s at 130 on a few sales. Payments for 1942 total $4.25 compared with 17 vast year. Bonds and commodities were uneven. At Chicago wheat was unchanged to off cent a bushel, corn ud V to down as much and hogs steady. Cotton was 15 to 30 cents a bale higher. Slipping in the curb were Alu minum of America, Humble Oil, Lake Shore, Creole Patroleum, Pittsburgh Plate Glass and Sher win Williams. Clinging to modest nlus marks were American Light, International Petroleum and Pennroad. The aggregate here was 98,625 shares versus 125,085 in the previous full session. ; Old Pink Failed To Check Ripley SIL.VERTON According to Miss Kreta Albright, there is atl45Ji. least one time the "not" applies to R1iv It nr "Net" in th Rin- I . ley Column. Uncertainty Keeps Grain Trade Light CHICAGO, Nov. 1 (Un certainty regarding- tjie i govern ment's program to make loan wheat available to millers-Monday kept trading on a Ismail scale in the wheat futures market and prices drifted in a narrow range. Small hedging sales and liqui dation of December contracts ac counted for most of the pressure and prices were off Va-V cent at times. This was offset, however by a few buying orders attribut ed to mills, although flour busi ness was reported very dull. Wheat closed unchanged to Vt lower compared with Saturday, December $1.25-, May $1.28; corn off to up, De cember 83, May 88; oats off to up; rye - higher andh soybeans off to higher. Traders said Washington offi cials are confronted ; with the problem of supplying : mills with wheat at around current prices because the ceiling on flour pro hibits millers from bidding high er in order to obtain sufficient grain. .Producers are holding wheat either at their own risk or under government loans at rates HOP HARRIG AN TWO X CACU-KTi CET Tuve.it BARNEY GOOGLE MICKEY MOUSE OH, MV HEAVENS' V r0RSH.
