Moths Active, Spray Is Need : i Apple and pear growers in the Willamette . valley should apply - the fourth cover spray now for the control of the codling moth. Robert E.- Rieder, county agricul f rural agent reminds orchardists. - Following an extended period of little activity, : moths are again , active, and during the past two evening eggs have been deposited. Under ordinary Willamette valley weather conditions, these eggs will hatch by September 8. The spray " ' should be applied before that date. The recommended spray is - powdered lead arsenate,- use at the rate of 3 pounds to 1 gallons "v cf water. In orchards- where cod- - ling moth is not a serious problem, 2 pounds of powdered lead arsen ate to 100 gallons of water is suf ficient to give control. " . Calcium arsenate, used at the rate of 3 pounds powdered cal cium arsenate to 100 gallons of water, has been used successfully in the Willamette valley for cod- : ling moth control. Tests carried on by the Entomology Department of .the Oregon Experiment Station indicate -that under Willamette valley conditions, calcium arsen ' ate is only slightly less effective than lead arsenate in coaling moth - control. Thoroughness of application, i Hieder states, is essential in cod ling moth control. Cole Brothers Combined circus, one of the two largest in the world. wDl arrive in Salem early Labor day from Portland, for performances at the Leslie school grounds. Probably the most outstanding of all high-in-the-air thrillers in store for Salem fans win be Betty Rich, the breath-taking aerial star, who hangs from the trapeze by her heel, dives headlong from a lofty perch with only an ankle catch to save her from a smash be low, ) and who challenges death twice each day by catching her self by her toes U without a net below. She is said to be the most daring aerialist on earth. Among the foreign stars are the Six Wallabies, sensational acro bats from Australia; the DeMar co troupe of high-perch perform ers; the Aussie Imps, trampoline staii from England, and the Ball- aires, aerial performers who have been abroad until the war broke out. All together, there are 387 spangleland stars and performers I listed under the Cole Brothers ban ners this year and the majority of them are making their first tour of this country. .
