Sailors Enjoy NY Symphony Concerts -Wide World Features NEW YORK The fleet was in. but the boys weren't whooping it up. They were sitting very quiet ly, instead, at Lewisohn stadium, listening to symphony music. , This has been going on in New York every summer for 25 years ever since the last war, when the stadium concerts were begun on June 23, lilS, aa a morale measure, with service men ad mitted free. - Once more a morale measure,, the concerts this year began with angular, short-sighted Artur Rod cinski as the first of ix conduct ors. The orchestra, as always aft er the first few season, is the New York Philharmonic symphony. Again Service men get the breaks The prime mover 23 years ago was Mrs Charles S. Guggenheurf er and she still is boss. Two and a half decades havemade Mrs. Guggenheimer "Minnie" to thous ands, including the old timers in the orchestra itself. The concerts have rolled up an aggregate audience of approxi mately six million now that am plification makes use of the en tire stadium area possible, around 300,000 people hear the concerts each summer. ' . - pespite travel restrictions and inconveniences, about the same nsunber of people are partici pating in these "get-away from-it-air vacations this rammer as in a normal year. , " One- of-the most popular ways of gaining solitude is to join a wilderness horseback riding group. These trips, non-profit, are conducted by the Trail Riders of the Wilderness and are sponsored by the American Forestry . associ ation and the national park serv ice. " . " iJDoctors, lawyers, school teach ers and stenographers participate. Singing, "Give Me My Boots and Saddle," just like old cowhands, they swing astride .horses and ride away into some of the most prim itive areas in the westr For m ten days or two weeks, with only the guides and other members of the party for com panions, they poke along moun tain trails, snow covered in high places along the continental di vide, or through valleys . dotted with mountain wild flowers. Radios are banned. There is no contact with civilization where newspapers may be had. 'It's an unwritten law that con versation shall center around such things as the technique of; making a diamond bitch, an art of the pack horse trade, and of -cinches and saddles. -The first rides were organized in 1933 and several are scheduled for each summer. In nine years about 600 men and women par ticipated in 43 expeditions to the major wilderness areas of ten states, riding 6000 miles of wil derness trail. i "There probably will be about 10 per. cent fewer people on the rides this summer than usual," says Erie Kauffman, of the for estry association. "General inter est in the rides is about the same as the average in past years. .
