Richmond PTA will sponsor
carnival Friday night at the
school from 7:30 to 10 o'clock.
The purpose of the carnival is
to raise funds for the group for
'the coming year. Airs, James
Bunnell Is directing the carnival
and the room mothers are assist-
ing. - :
Entertainment, which will be
in the rooms and hall, includes
a merry-Jo-round, beauty shon.
wood burning, fortune telling,
variety show and refreshment
booths. '
Mr. George Kayser, the newly
installed president, is inviting
the parents, former Richmond
students and friends to attend.

Martha Gerig
Mrs. Robert Klempel enter
tained Tuesday night at her
home in East Center street
honoring Miss Martha Gerig
whose marriage to Mr. Herbert
Franz of Lind, WaslL, will be an
event of early June.
The evening was spent inform
ally, with games, music and a
mock wedding. The decorations
were snow balls, blue lupin and
peonies. During the evening Miss
Gerig was presented with a crys
tal shower, following whih re
freshments were served. Those
bidden to honor Miss Gerig were

meeting of the year today at
2 p. m. in Mt. Jefferson room,
chamber of commerce! Mrs. Leif
Bergsvik will be the guest
speaker and will show pictures
of Camp Smith Creek. She will
also outline activities, needs
and interests of groups at the
camp. There will be election of
officers.

At Air Base
The wedding of. Mrs. Milli
cent Stevens of Salem, and
Sergeant- Harvey C Alexander
of Texas was solemnized at a
candlelight service Saturday
night, May 16 in the chapel of
'the Paine Field air base in
Washington. Chaplain H. T.
, Neve officiated.
The bride wore a powder blue
chiffon dress with a corsage of
white orchids. Mother of the
. bride, Mrs.' Evelyn Stiediger,
wore a green print dress with a
cbrsage of bronze orchids.
Sergeant Raymond Kirk was
best man. A small reception f ol
lowed at the Monte Cristo hotel
in Everett

New Cake
A cake will use honey as the
sweetening, just to lengthen out
the sugar ration.
HONEY CAKE
2 cups sifted cake flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
y4 teaspoon salt
Vz cup shortening
2 egg yolks
1 cup honey
Vt cup milk
2 egg whites
1 teaspoon vanilla
Sift together flour, baking
powder and salt Cream short
ening until light; beat egg yolks
lemon colored, gradually adding
k cup of the honey while beat
ing. Add the egg-honey mixture
to the creamed shortening,
creaming while adding. Add
sifted dry ingredients alternate
ly with milk, mixing well. Beat
egg whites stiff; gradually beat
in remaining M cup honey until
mixture stands in stiff peaks.
Fold into cake batter until well
blended. Bake in 2 greased 9-
inch layer-cake pans in mod
erate oven (373 degrees) 30
minutes. Cool; frost

tion exercises were held at the
school house Monday night when
Floyd Webb presented diplomas to
Mary Massee and Elain Town
send. Those taking part in the pro
gram were Donna Bradford. Rich
ard Anderson, David Massee,
Jeannene Myers, Dorothy Pearce
and Joanne Fabry of Salem.
Rev. C. O. Goodman gave the
main address.
Due to weather condtiions there
was a basket dinner held in the
basement of the school Tuesday.

Open House
Friday at
West Salem
WEST SALEM The annual
"open house" will be featured at
the local grade schools Friday
from 7 to 8 p. m. Work done by
the students will be on display
in each room.
At 8:30 the gymnasium will be
opened to the public and a pro
gram will be presented. Dickie
Louthan will represent the fifth
graders by giving a recitation.
Students of the sixth grade will
give a play. Lois June Hollings
head will give the "Gettysburg
address" and Maurice Dabbs a
poem as representatives of the
seventh grade. Eighth graders
will give a play.
The school band will play sev
eral selections and numbers will
be presented by a mixed quartet
The religious education classes
will display some of their work
in the gymnasium.
Parents and friends are invited.
Club Plans to
Lease House
PERRYDALE The Good Will
club met with Mrs. Van Staavern
Friday with the Ballston Sewing
club as guests.
It was announced that the first
aid cabinet has been installed in
the school house. It was thought
that 9. few blankets were needed
and that they will be bought out
of the money derived from salvage
in this community.
The club ladies have been want'
ing to have a place of their own
to meet and the possibility of leas
ing an empty house in town was
discussed. It will be brought up
again at the next meeting which
will be at the Irwin White home,
Guests were Mrs. Martin Van
Groos, Mrs. Bowman, Mrs. Mc
Cullough, and Mrs. D. Mellema,
all of Ballston, and Mrs. Dan Mc
Intosh.
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Walker of
Salem and Mr. and Mrs. Jack De
Jong were dinner guests at the
Robert Mitchell home Friday ev
ening.

SILVERTON Silverton's
aundry operated for a number of
years here will close according to
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Stamey, opera
tors. Mr. Stamey has accepted
position with the Fairview home
at Salem
Elgin McCleary, former Silver-
ton water superintendent and city
manager, called on former em
ployes and other friends at the
city hall Saturday. Mr. McCleary,
now employed at Portland, plans
to move his family there as soon
as suitable living quarters can be
found following the close of the
local school.
Miss Olivia Olson, student a
Willamette university, and Miss
Patience Moberg, student at
Salem business college, were vis
itors at Silverton during the
weekend. Miss Olson was the
guest of her aunt, Miss Olivia 01
son and Miss Moberg of her cou
sin, Miss Althea Meyer.
Arthur Dickman, who for years
has been associated with the Hart'
man garage at Silverton, has ac
cepted a position in the Portland
shipyards.
Mrs. Al Lef aid plans to move
to Portland as soon as school
out She is now closing out the
jewelry business of her late hus
band.
The first cotton comforter pro
ject in Marion county under the
federal set-up and locally under
the direction of Miss Frances
Clinton, home demonstration
agent, was finished here Saturday,
Over 300 comforters have been
made at the Silverton armory in
the 10-day period under the local
supervision of Mrs. Mary Storlie,
Mrs. Josie Mires, Mrs. Edith Beu
gli and Mrs. Helen Wlesner.

Man Killed by
Rolling Log
PEDEE Pearl Cooper of In
dependence was instantly killed
when a log rolled from a truck
and struck him while working for
Gage Brothers, near Kings Valley
Thursday. Graveside services were
held at the Kings Valley ceme
tery Friday afternoon. Mr. Coop
er was 54 years old. He is surviv
ed by his wife and a brother,

brother, Loren, of Falls City.

spent the weekend at Hood River
as a guest of Rev. and Mrs. Low

Mrs. Gladys Olsen of Molalla
visited Sunday with her sister,
Mrs. W. T. Hoffman. Mrs. Olsen
is clerk of the rationing board in
Molalla and she and Mr. Hoffman,
who is chairman of the board
here, had problems of the boards
to discuss.
Betty Zumwalt, a sorority sister
of Barbara Westerman at OSC,
visited with Miss Westerman last
week-end. Sunday, the girls, Mr.
and Mrs. George Westerman of
Seattle, and Mr. and Mrs. G. S.
Westerman enjoyed the day at the
coast, returning by way of Cor-
vallis to return Miss Zumwalt to
school.
Dr. and Mrs. C. A Fratzke and
children returned Sunday from a
week's vacation at the coast.
