Shower Honors Martha Gerig Mrs. Robert Klempel enter tained Tuesday night at her home in East Center street honoring Miss Martha Gerig whose marriage to Mr. Herbert Franz of Lind, WaslL, will be an event of early June. A small reception f ol lowed at the Monte Cristo hotel in Everett Honey- tens New Cake A cake will use honey as the sweetening, just to lengthen out the sugar ration. HONEY CAKE 2 cups sifted cake flour 3 teaspoons baking powder y4 teaspoon salt Vz cup shortening 2 egg yolks 1 cup honey Vt cup milk 2 egg whites 1 teaspoon vanilla Sift together flour, baking powder and salt Cream short ening until light; beat egg yolks lemon colored, gradually adding k cup of the honey while beat ing. Add the egg-honey mixture to the creamed shortening, creaming while adding. Add sifted dry ingredients alternate ly with milk, mixing well. Beat egg whites stiff; gradually beat in remaining M cup honey until mixture stands in stiff peaks. Fold into cake batter until well blended. Bake in 2 greased 9- inch layer-cake pans in mod erate oven (373 degrees) 30 minutes. Swee iidams Mid-Willamette Valley New Reports from The Statesman9 8 Open House Friday at West Salem WEST SALEM The annual "open house" will be featured at the local grade schools Friday from 7 to 8 p. m. Work done by the students will be on display in each room. At 8:30 the gymnasium will be opened to the public and a pro gram will be presented. Dickie Louthan will represent the fifth graders by giving a recitation. Students of the sixth grade will give a play. Lois June Hollings head will give the "Gettysburg address" and Maurice Dabbs a poem as representatives of the seventh grade. Eighth graders will give a play. The school band will play sev eral selections and numbers will be presented by a mixed quartet The religious education classes will display some of their work in the gymnasium. Parents and friends are invited. Club Plans to Lease House PERRYDALE The Good Will club met with Mrs. Van Staavern Friday with the Ballston Sewing club as guests. It was announced that the first aid cabinet has been installed in the school house. It was thought that 9. few blankets were needed and that they will be bought out of the money derived from salvage in this community. The club ladies have been want' ing to have a place of their own to meet and the possibility of leas ing an empty house in town was discussed. Silverton News SILVERTON Silverton's aundry operated for a number of years here will close according to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Stamey, opera tors. Mr. Stamey has accepted position with the Fairview home at Salem Elgin McCleary, former Silver- ton water superintendent and city manager, called on former em ployes and other friends at the city hall Saturday. Mr. McCleary, now employed at Portland, plans to move his family there as soon as suitable living quarters can be found following the close of the local school.
