Wells Road to
Be Improved
INDEPENDENCE Work is ex
. pected to start immediately upon
improving the Independence
Wells road. Thursday night at a
meeting in Portland the state
highway commission decided to
take over the road and put it in
first-class condition to be used as
a diversion road for Camp Adair.
Polk and Benton counties and the
city of Independence waived . all
rights to the road. It includes
First street in Independence and
continues. directly south of town.
It is hoped that it will relieve the
traffic on the highway between
Salem and Albany. ,
' Immediate plans provide - for
$3500 to , be . spent ' in improving
the bridge over the Luckiamute
river and $2500 to improve the
Berry Creek: bridge.

Earl Phelps will motor to Seattle,
Sunday for a visit with their son,

tion machinist school. Their son,
Gerald Phelps , and family will
join' them in Portland.

granddaughter, Mrs. Gloria' Mal
lory, to Tacoma, Wash., where
-they attended a baseball game be
tween ' the Tacoma and Vancou
ver, BC, teams. Mallory is a mem
ber of the team. Mrs. Mallory has
been staying with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs, Elmer Wadsworth
at Harrisburg.

Saalfeld has been elected to a po
sition on the high school teaching
staff for next year. Mrs. Saalfeld
graduated from Gervais high
school in the class of 1932. She
taught two years at Central Point
before her marriage about three
years ago.

Services Set
TURNER ' The baccalaureate
services for .the 1942 Turner high
school graduating class . will be
held on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the
Methodist church, with Rev. John
Mitchell, pastor of the church, de
livering the sermon. Other
churches of , the town will partic
ipate in the program. The seniors
to be honored include Versa Hick
man, Lorena ' McLerran, Ruth
Bones, Gladys Sunderland, Ruth
Davis, Eleanor Fowler andrWilbur
Cox. This is the smallest graduat
ing class at Turner in a number of
years. '
