Thursday night at a meeting in Portland the state highway commission decided to take over the road and put it in first-class condition to be used as a diversion road for Camp Adair. Polk and Benton counties and the city of Independence waived . all rights to the road. It includes First street in Independence and continues. directly south of town. It is hoped that it will relieve the traffic on the highway between Salem and Albany. , ' Immediate plans provide - for $3500 to , be . spent ' in improving the bridge over the Luckiamute river and $2500 to improve the Berry Creek: bridge.
